Flux Capacitor: Pete, Jason, and Mike Specht were born and raised (literally) as a power trio. The Specht brothers’ intuitive dynamics are the engine of Flux Capacitor’s progressive, psychedelic rock sound. Steady regional touring, emanating from their Reading, and Philly PA home base earned the band broader recognition, ultimately landing them on festivals like Bonnaroo, Peach Fest, Wormtown Music Festival, Domefest, and Werk-Out West. Flux Capacitor’s melding of varied rock idioms with elements of electronica- in the context of fluid improvisation- and an ear for melody and song structure made them a perfect fit for headlining spots at festivals and support for others who share a musical and cultural aesthetic with Flux Capacitor and their steadily growing fan base. The Cell is a 2000 science fiction psychological thriller film directed by Tarsem Singh in his directorial debut, and starring Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D’Onofrio. The film follows scientists as they use experimental technology to enter the mind of a comatose serial killer in order to locate where he has hidden his latest kidnap victim

Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson with George Lucas as executive producer. Based on conceptual designs by Brian Froud, the film was written by Terry Jones, and many of its characters are played by puppets produced by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as 16-year-old Sarahand David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin King. Tom Waits kicked off his career as a broken-voiced Beat-influenced crooner of poetic rhapsodies about the hard knock life, but by the mid-1980s, things took a weird turn. The melancholy 1970s singer-songwriter conventions dropped away to reveal a deranged carnival barker, howling over the racket of a junkyard band.
And while the LPs SWORDFISHTROMBONES (1983), RAIN DOGS (1985) and FRANK’S WILD YEARS (1987) were challenging for many of Waits’ old fans, the concert film produced around their songs was anything but your basic concert film

Bowerbird is pleased to present a special screening of John Cage Meets Sun Ra: The Complete Concert at The Rotunda.

Recorded at Sideshows by the Seashore along the Coney Island boardwalk on June 8th, 1986 as documented by John Polizzi under the commission of event producers Rick Russo and Bronwyn Rucker.

From Pitchfork: “John Cage Meets Sun Ra: The Complete Concert gradually emerges as something greater than a footnote. That’s not because the pairing results in an ‘avant super duo.’ As it happens, the two artists tend to trade off soloing, and only play together audibly at one point during this hour-plus set, recorded at Coney Island. Yet despite the arms-length embrace, the overall concert has a surprisingly seamless quality.”

Outdoor spaces are weather-dependent. Flea market wares may be sold including home decor, kitchen supplies, clothing, toys, books, beauty care, you name it.

The United Block Captains Association Hospital (UBCAH) is committed to supporting Block Captains throughout the City of Philadelphia. We provide information, training, and resources to assist Block Captains in activities such as: coordinating and running community meetings; neighborhood clean-ups; conflict resolution; and resource dissemination. Moreover, we encourage Block Captains to be positive leaders in all things. The UBCAH offers several trainings for both adults and children in our neighborhoods. More specifically, we provide Mentors, the “Fun, Fit, and Free” Group, holiday toy giveaways, school supply giveaways, and a beloved seven-week Summer Fun Program which offers youth activities including roller skating, bowling, swimming, film screenings, amusement park trips, cultural education, community gardening, and neighborhood block and lot clean-ups.

Belated, heartfelt thanks to for a huge donation of undergarments AND to Penn students for bags and bags of clothing, hygiene products, and household items for the little cabinets outside of our east entrance. MONO MEANS ONE is a psychedelic prog trio and the brainchild of bassist and composer John Ferrara, best known as the bass player and co-founder of the acclaimed world fusion band “ Consider the Source .” Mono Means One’s sound contains melancholic melodies, rich sonic textures with Drum ‘N’ Bass grooves and Mathrock sensibilities. Half composed and half improvised, the music is often dark, sometimes bright and other times heavy, oscillating between chill grooves to almost unbearable intensity. Originally composed entirely on the bass guitar, John paired up with Rob Madore (Drums) and Isaac Young (Keys), of Connecticut’s amazing PX3 to borrow some of their “Futuristic Synth-Driven Madness” to help bring layers and textures to these compositions that fill rooms across the Northeast.

MUMS THE WORD

is a 9-piece, funky psychedelic rock-and-roll band from Philadelphia and South Jersey. Mums released their 3rd album “Mums the World” on Dec. 30, 2023. Their music pulls inspiration from The Grateful Dead, Parliament Funkadelic, and Frank Zappa. Comprised of percussionists, bass, guitars, keys, horns, and vocal harmonies, they create a rich texture of sound! Psychedelic and funky, they play their own style of Rock ‘n’ Roll blended with improvisational elements to create a unique live experience. Upbeat and groovy with their kosmic dancer, elaborate costumes, and by regularly inviting musical guests on stage, they keep the crowd on their feet, on their toes, and always moving!

NOAH GIBNEY TRIO
Back for a repeat performance at The Rotunda, Noah Gibney fronts the Noah Gibney Trio, a soul/jam band with a following mainly in Reading, PA, but also in Philly, Lancaster, Lehigh, the Jersey Shore, and NYC. Recently, Noah collaborated with Grammy-nominated musician G. Love from G. Love and Special Sauce on his debut EP “The Serendipity Sessions.” That EP was even heard by President Biden, which led Gibney to meet him!

A meditation on loneliness, her new album is her most audacious work yet, synthesizing disparate and unexpected influences from throughout rousay’s long and varied career as a performer.

claire rousay is a singular artist, known for challenging conventions in experimental and ambient music forms. rousay masterfully incorporates textural found sounds, sumptuous drones and candid field recordings into music that celebrates the beauty in life’s banalities. Her music is curatorial and granular in detail, deftly shaped into emotionally affecting pieces. sentiment is a meditation of the poignant emotional terrains of loneliness, nostalgia, sentimentality, guilt, and s*x. The album’s narrative arc is guided by delicate musical gestures and artistic vulnerability, audaciously synthesizing disparate and unexpected influences. rousay crafted the songs in various homes, bedrooms, hotels, and other private places, the feeling of time and energy spent alone radiating from each passage. The album is a collection of heart-rending, incisive pop songs that explore universal feelings with subtlety and remarkable vision.

Rose Actor-Engel is a Philadelphia based musician and composer. She uses synthesizer, tape and field recordings to create ambient and experimental music, implementing specific rules and protocols to determine structure. She has been recording/performing as Apologist since 2018.

Grant Calvin Weston has blazed a harmolodic, funkadelic trail through modern jazz. This record is a culmination of recordings made on the West Coast and his hometown of Philadelphia. Weston puts his Midas touch on electronics and acoustic instruments that blow the socks off any jazz-rock poser out there. Listen to the man who funked-up Ornette Coleman in the 1970s.
Come hear him on the drums and ask him anything about his approach to improv music as well as his experiences with James Blood Ulmer, John Lurie and The Lounge Lizards, Ornette Coleman, and others!
