our house montessori
A Montessori preschool serving families of center city Phildaelphia
An education based on the philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori, with the focus on the ages of birth to three years old.
The primary kids were back on the move this week, taking to the Delaware River waterfront for a ferry trip across to Camden before having some fun at Spruce Harbor Park and finishing things off with a picnic and some cold treats. What an amazing day and excellent way to end the first summer session!
It's summertime so the OHM primary kids are striking out to explore the four corners of Philly with nothing more than their legs and a pass! First trip up? A visit to for a day of fun with a picnic lunch! I'm not sure what the record for most runs on the giant wooden slide is but the kids certainly gave it a valiant effort 😂😂. Smith is such a wonderful place and generations of Philadelphians have been so fortunate to have such a gem in our community!

Love is Love is Love...Happy Pride Month from the OHM family! ♥️♥️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈♥️♥️
Although the end of the year is bittersweet as we get ready to say goodbye to another group of amazing kindergarten humans, it also means we got to head out on our annual phield trip, partaking in the Philly right of passage of "ditching" school, hopping on the BSL to the stadium to take in a business persons special down at the Bank. The kids got to see a Phil's win over the defending champs and lots (and I mean lots) of treats were had by all. They even got on the jumbotron! This trip is always a universal favorite and really embodies our philosophy of celebrating our diverse city and using public transportation to explore it. Such a memorable experience for everyone involved... ♥️♥️🥹🥹
Next up are a few pieces from the Earth Class! They took a mixed media approach to create these stunning and endearing pieces that combined their love of painting, sewing, and the mature london plane tree that is frequently a part of their daily excursions. Enjoy!
Ok time to showcase some of our 2024 art. The show was called Sound + Vision and the pieces were inspired by the music of OHM...songs and genres we listen to and sing, artists we admire and even the media we use to consume it. First up we have two of our Toddler class pieces. These large scale works came out stunning and the pics don't really do either of 'em justice. Enjoy!
Just a heads up, y'all. a bunch of art show content is incoming so , so get ready...
The pieces were amazing and inspired as ever, the parents really showed up to support the school...and had a great time doing it, too. It's times like these that we realize how lucky we are to have our entire community ♥️♥️
Sorry we've been M.I.A. for a bit. We've been in the weeds getting ready for the art show this weekend. It's called Sound + Vision. The kids have been hard at work making some amazing stuff. We can't wait to show y'all this weekend! Stay tuned...
The beautiful weather this week had the Kindergartners out on their latest adventure. This time they hopped on the BSL and headed down to to check out the recently completed Anna C. Verna Playground for some climbing and sliding fun...finishing with a delightful picnic. This beautiful and unique play space is fun for kids of all ages and we highly recommend checking it out!
Before all this rain, the toddlers set out in search of signs of spring at the community garden. They checked on our plot, looked for flowers and buds, had a picnic lunch, then capped things off with some time basking in the sun on the newly green lawn. Such a great day to kick off the spring in our favorite green space...
The OHM Kindergartners are on the move again! This time they hopped on and headed to the Philly Flower Show to see our patchwork mural installed as part of the exhibit celebrating the wonderful . We love our walkable city and are so grateful to be able to access a world class event like the Flower Show by walking out our front door and taking a short bus ride. We hope many of you got a chance to check out the show and see the children's work this past week, but if not, the mural will be moving to the community garden soon so hopefully you'll be able to catch a peek there! 🌷🌸🌹🌺🏵️💐🪻
If you head to the Flower Show this week, stop by exhibit #25 to check out the large scale patchwork mural we created for the exhibit honoring the . The community garden is a vital extension of our classrooms, providing opportunities for learning, a beautiful green space for us to play in, have picnics at, harvest herbs for our meals, and that's all on top of getting to tend to our plot! They did such an amazing job creating the exhibit and were so proud to be a part of it. The classes were asked to create multiple panels depicting something they love about the garden. All of our students and teachers were so inspired by the project and they made some really wonderful pieces which really illustrate how much we love the garden. We're so thrilled with how it came out! Perhaps the best part though is the plan to install the mural after the show at the garden as part of their beautification plan!
We kicked off We Can All Be Heroes Month with our annual Bowie Week. Everyone got their Bowie Bolt, we had Starman pizzas, listened to our Peter and the Wolf record, and definitely danced.
Our classes had wonderful winter socials this week, inviting our parents to join us for a festive circle before heading out into the courtyard for some homemade treats and hot chocolate! We hope everyone has a relaxing and joyous holiday season. See ya next year!
Happy Hanukkah to those that celebrate! The toddlers got their festive season off to a wonderful start with a cultural lesson about lighting the menorah, playing dreidel and of course eating lots of Latkes!
Today the Kindergarteners continued the annual tradition of going to get our courtyard tree from and hauling it back themselves in our garden cart. They have such immense pride in helping to select and transport the tree that will adorn our entrance for the next month. We're so glad to be able to get out into our community with the kids and support local businesses!
Happy Halloween from the OHM family! May your night be spooky and safe and filled with tons of your favorite treats! 🎃🎃🧟♀️🧟🧟♂️
We had a wonderful time this past weekend participating in the Family Matters Conference chatting with parents (and parents to be) about the benefits of a Montessori education for their young children and getting to show off some selections from our diverse and always growing classroom libraries! It was such a warm and supportive atmosphere and we can't wait to come back next year!
last weekend marked 13 years since our house montessori was born into this world, in our tiny one room school house/speakeasy in bella vista. no words could explain how hard it was early on, the myriad great times we've had, and how amazing it has been to move into the big house and grow to serve so many more families, along with our outstanding teachers that have joined us along the way. cheers to many more lucky, beautiful, and meaningful years. and cheers to all our alumni parents and for all the love and support to christina, sam, and i (and the rest of the gang). we appreciate you all, past, present, and future. -pmg

Many of you know that a primary focus of our curriculum is our classes' excursions into our surrounding community, but you may not know that our kindergarteners take this a step (or many steps) further with an additional weekly trip that's just for them. In the first month of school they've gone to the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art and as always, they're great ambassadors of our school! Once again, we are so grateful to be located in an area that affords us such amazing experiences and opportunities for learning!
Days like today are why we are so grateful to be located in the rich cultural center of Philadelphia. Our afternoon classes headed down to the parkway to participate in Chasing Love, joining "Little Amal", a 12 foot puppet of a Syrian refugee girl and symbol of refugee rights created by , to help illustrate that Philly is a place welcoming of all. We were proud to be a part of this event, which none of our students or teachers will soon forget ❤️❤️❤️
Aaaaand we're back! We've had such an amazing first week of school, welcoming back out returners as well as our new students and their families. We hope everyone's year is off to a great start and we wish you all the best for the 2023/24 school year!

We celebrate pride every day of every month of every year, but today we wore the colors of the Pride Flag. Happy Pride Month from OHM!
This past week our soon-to-be graduating kindergartners took part in a Philly right of passage: playing hooky and taking SEPTA - iseptaphilly.com to catch the for a business person's special. What an amazing day with such a funny, unique and kind crew. Needless to say, lots of treats were had, including a come from behind win. This whole group has been with us since their toddler days and we're blown away by the wonderful people they are becoming...
Ok last art show post, we swear! One of our favorite parts of the art show is the Monday after when the children get to tour the "galleries" and see their art hanging. They have such pride in the work that they did and love to see and comment on the pieces made by the other classes. It's such a nice way to end the process that began months before...
