Sleep hygiene refers to healthy sleep habits. It is important because proper sleep is crucial for maintaining good mental and physical health. When life gets busy we tend to cut back on sleep even though good sleep helps improve our quality of life. Here are some tips to help you prioritize good sleep hygiene ✨

1️⃣Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday. This reinforces your body’s cycle, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up everyday.
2️⃣ Creating a relaxing bedtime routine helps you unwind AND helps your body recognize its time for bed. This may help you fall asleep more quickly. Ex.) warm bath, stretches, breathing, reading a book.
3️⃣ Electronic devices emit blue light which can reduce melatonin levels in your body. Melatonin is a chemical that controls our sleep/wake cycle. Interfering with this can make it more difficult to fall asleep.
4️⃣ Making your sleep environment comfortable varies from person to person. Some tips include having a comfortable bed set, earplugs if you’re a light sleeper, and a cool bedroom temperature.
5️⃣Using your bed for sleep helps strengthen your brain’s association between your bed and sleep, making it easier to fall asleep.
