I am heartbroken.
First the announcement of PAFA no longer holding degree programs,
To now the sudden unexpected closing of my Alma mater

What will we become without art?
It’s terrifying question to even entertain.

My Mother’s Belly⁠

The bread of her waist, a loaf⁠
we would knead with 8 year old palms⁠
sweaty from play. My brother and I marveled ⁠
at the ridges and grooves. How they would summit at her navel.⁠
How her belly looked like a walnut. How we were once seeds⁠
that resided inside.⁠
We giggled whenever she would recline on the couch,⁠
lift her shirt, unbutton her pants, ⁠
let her belly spread like cake batter in a pan.⁠
It was as much a treat as licking the sweet from electric mixers on birthdays.⁠
⁠
The undulating of my mother’s belly was not⁠
a shame she hid from her children. She knew⁠
we came from this. Seemed grateful.⁠
Her belly was a gift we kept passing between us.⁠
It was both hers, of her body⁠
and ours for having made it new, different.⁠
Her belly was an altar of flesh built in remembrance⁠
of us, by us.⁠
⁠
What remains of my mother’s belly⁠
resides in a container of ashes I keep in a closet.⁠
Every once and again, I open the box,⁠
sift through the fine crystals with palms⁠
that were once eight. Feel the grooves and ridges⁠
that do not summit now but rill through fingers.⁠
Granules that are so much more salt⁠
than sweet today. And yet, still I marvel⁠
at her once body. Even in this form say,⁠
“I came from this.”⁠

WOMB TO TOMB

For all those who don’t know… my mom and parents met in Lamaze classes.

I was due 6/27 and Martina was due 6/17… I came into the world early on Martina’s due date and she arrived fashionably late on my due date.

We’ve been friends ever since (except when I was a jerk from 11-13 😣)- preschool, grade school, high school…Navigating through our crazy 20s, discovering who we are and want to be in our 30s, and now ready to flourish in our 40s!

To know you is to love you.

And I am incredibly honored to have known you and loved you as long as I have. Anyone that meets you is so very fortunate to have you shine your light on them.

THIS IS 40!

I feared the number 40 my whole life and what it meant to get older…

as a woman, as a artist, as a dreamer, as a body, and as a person -

I wondered…
did I make something with my life?

Am I where I need to be?

And as a late bloomer, am I on time?

On Saturday I turned that feared number and realized I was no longer afraid

I was, I am, excited to see what’s next, who I become, what I may accomplish with more confidence and acceptance with who I am and where I’ve been.

And as I journaled that morning, I thought

THE BEST IS YET TO COME…

Flash forward an hour, Matty proposed to me on our porch with my mom and our dogs.

So yes, this is 40, and we’re off to a pretty good start

A phrase I never used for Emalia and Nikki… yet right now, Auntie feels like the right way to describe their love…

They have been there since day 1 of my yoga journey.

They have taught me, loved me, protected me, supported me, celebrated me, and - after a 3 year absence of not being in each other’s lives - came down to Philly to be the first (of my yoga family) to bless my studio. 💕💕💕
