It's International Vulture Awareness Day! Meet some of the faces of our vulture family here at the Zoo 😊 As scavengers, vultures play a very important role in the food chain and their ecosystems by helping to keep environments clean and prevent the spread of disease. As an exciting update, all of our vulture species at the Zoo now share one home in a mixed exhibit. This is a great open space outdoors that allows the birds the ability to fly and access to natural environmental conditions, like full spectrum lighting. It's also a good opportunity to build a social group!
Fun vulture fact: When turkey vultures feel threatened, they will vomit to scare off what they don't want near them...and it smells HORRIBLE! 🤮
We dare you to name a more precious duo than Tua and baby Jambi 💕

Khari is currently visible to guests and can be seen daily at Primate Passage sharing an exhibit with our black & white colobuses upon entering the Zoo.
Red-tailed monkeys and black & white colobus are two species the Zoo actively works to conserve in nature, through our partnership with the New Nature Foundation (NNF). NNF partners with communities, empowering families to meet their needs in sustainable ways. Through promotion of efficient stoves, biomass cooking briquettes, tree planting and environmental education, NNF protects habitats for countless species like red-tailed monkeys in Western Uganda 🌍

🐢 Reptile and Amphibian Curator Lauren and Keeper Andrew recently traveled to Guatemala to fill a gap in research on freshwater turtles in Central America.
The goal of the trip was to trap and release mud and musk turtles in order to gather baseline data of their populations across several different sites. This information is a critical first step in developing conservation strategies as it helps to identify a species' specific needs.

Summer heat + cold showers = ☯️
Guess what, everyone... IT'S A BOY 💙 Say hello to Jambi, our newborn, critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. Jambi, named after a city on the island of Sumatra, was born on June 26 to mom Tua and dad Sugi. Jambi is looking very strong and Tua continues to be an excellent mother, nursing and holding him at all times.
Though Mom and baby are now exploring their outdoor habitat at PECO Primate Reserve, the two still make their own schedule on when they are visible to guests. They have access to their outdoor and indoor habitats where visitors can get a glimpse of them, as well as access to their bedroom space to spend time alone. Everyone welcome Jambi to our Philly Zoo Family! 🦧💕
Happy International Armadillo Day! Nine-banded armadillos like Trooper here are the only species of armadillo found in the United States.
