Following Temple Field Hockey’s dominant season opening victory against Queens, the Owls were looking to keep it rolling against Lock Haven. They did just that, coasting by the Bald Eagles 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Lawrence Field.

It was a close game for the first two minutes, but once the Owls got on the board they completely took command. Temple scored two goals in both the second and third quarters and polished off the victory with another goal in the fourth. Temple’s defense was suffocating yet again, only allowing two shots that goalkeeper Alex Lepore saved both times.

The Owls’ offense has now scored 13 goals through their first two games — something that took them 14 games to do last season. Nine different players have already scored a goal, showing the depth the Owls boast this season.

The Owls continue their five-game road stretch and head to Charlottesville, Virginia to take on No. 3 Virginia (1-0, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) on Sept. 6 at 5 p.m.

TUPD investigating officer impersonation scam - The Temple News 08/31/2024

Temple’s Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Unit is investigating an officer impersonation scam, DPS announced in a statement Saturday morning.

Two Temple parents received calls from a phone number with a 215 area code Saturday where the caller claimed to be a Temple Police officer and falsely informed the families that their child had been arrested. The impersonator requested money to be sent via Apple Pay or Cash App in order for their sons to be released.

“The investigation is ongoing, however we can share that the two incidents appeared to target student-athletes,” wrote Vice President for Public Safety Jennifer Griffin in a statement to The Temple News. “We see these types of scams happening nationwide and targeting a variety of populations. We want to ensure our community is aware.”

Worshiping the religion and lessons of Dune - The Temple News 08/31/2024

Assistant Opinion Editor Bradley McEntee reflects on the protagonist of Dune and how he helped them come to terms with generational trauma and mental illness.

“Paul is a sign I don’t have to yield to my family history, because the moment he does, all the good he was meant to do goes to nothing. Sometimes I wish I had the missing pieces to my family history because there could be solace in having a holistic picture of why I think and act the way I do. That comfort dissipates when I remember what happened with Paul when he leaned into the unknown, and I would rather avoid that fate.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: The Temple News has a long history of serving the Temple community. For 103 years, we have kept the university's students, faculty and community members informed.

But in the past few years alone, The Temple News has stepped up to the plate to cover major high-stakes stories. We have covered national stories like union strikes, the resignation of a president, the death of another president, two presidential searches, the death of a campus police officer, name, image and likeness shortcomings and multiple on-campus protests.

I am honored to serve as the editor-in-chief of The Temple News for our 103rd year of publication. We have a lot of fun things planned as the year goes on. Under my leadership, I can promise the Temple community that our staff will exhaust every effort to serve as the most reliable, accurate news source for Temple’s students, parents, alumni and faculty.

There are a lot of news outlets here on campus, and even more in Philadelphia. None cover Temple like we do. Thank you for trusting us for more than 100 years to serve as the official watchdog of Temple University. We aren’t going anywhere any time soon.

The team behind SAASA’s second act prepares for a new era - The Temple News 08/30/2024

Since senior English major Ray Epstein revived Student Activists Against Sexual Assault in 2022, it’s become the crown jewel of Temple’s student organizations — partnering with everyone from fraternities to the ride-sharing app Uber to combat what activists often describe as campus r**e culture.

But this fall begins a transitional phase for SAASA. Two of its “Core Four” leaders graduate next spring, and Epstein became Temple Student Government president in April. As her attention starts to split, Epstein is thinking about what SAASA will look like after she graduates.

Epstein invited younger SAASA operatives to intra-institutional meetings, so they could become familiar to those with whom the organization works. And while the organization’s decision-makers — who affectionately call one another “The Core Four” — haven’t yet named a formal successor to the top role, they did appoint a co-vice president, junior criminal justice major Bella Kwok.

“I think Ray envisioned the vice president being someone able to take over,” Kwok, who led a victim-advocacy group of her own in high school. “Since she and Val are the same grade, I think they wanted someone a little younger than them.”

Temple Football opens up its 2024 season against No. 16 Oklahoma on Friday night in Norman, Oklahoma. The Owls are coming into the season with 43 new players and have more questions than answers, especially at the quarterback position.

The Sooners open up at 43.5 point favorites against the Owls. Temple will have to play absolute perfect football to even have a remote chance at putting themselves in upset territory. Will Temple be able to keep it competitive? Find out here.

“There is one major key we need to focus on going out to Oklahoma, and it’s us, that’s it,” Drayton said. “Everything else we can’t control, but what we can control is what happens in this building. How we go about our preparation, how we approach the game, our mindset leading up into the game, it's really all about us.”

Yesterday, Temple's chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine organized a march, demanding the university condemn Israel and divest in monetary support.

The march began at Charles Library before protesters moved to Alter Hall and finished by going north up Broad Street to the Hillel Center for Jewish Life. Many Jewish students were in the building as protesters shouted from across the street.

Temple leadership supportive of new performance-based state funding system - The Temple News 08/30/2024

The Pennsylvania General Assembly passed a bill this summer introducing performance-based funding for state-related universities. The universities involved in the bill, Temple included, will be reviewed by a council who will request multiple sets of data in order to qualify, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The Performance-based Funding Act, formerly Senate Bill 1154, will require state-related universities to submit performance data in order to qualify for future state funding. The data will include multiple metrics about the universities, including its affordability, retention and graduation rates, profiles of students, and post-graduate employment rates and salaries.

Temple leadership has been open to the idea of performance-based funding as a whole. Submitting data to the council for transparency is not a new request for Temple, who has already provided this information for years, said Temple’s Chief Operating Officer Ken Kaiser.

Kaiser also said the success of the bill will largely depend on whether or not Temple will be asked to provide data that is measurable.

“One of the principles of performance-based funding is it should be simple, easy to understand, and not have too many metrics in there,” Kaiser said. “The key here is we can only give them data that we have. So the metrics can only be based on data that schools collect.”

Temple Men's Soccer went into Thursday’s matchup against Monmouth surging with momentum. The Owls were coming off their first win of the season and hoped to get a second against the Hawks, who were coming off a shutout victory against Fairfield.

Temple scored first in its first two games of the season, but couldn’t find the back of the net against Monmouth. Hawks’ goalkeeper Eryk Dymora had his second straight clean sheet and the Owls were handed their first loss of the season in a 2-0 defeat.

“We know what we’re expecting in attack and decision making and then we know our expectations defensively,” said head coach Bryan Green. “It’s nothing too complicated.”

“We want our freedom”: Palestine protesters march at Hillel Center, Charles Library - The Temple News 08/30/2024

Students for Justice in Palestine held a rally and march on Thursday, demanding Temple to condemn Israel and divest in monetary support. Students also ordered Temple to drop all disciplinary action against student protesters who were arrested for participating in an encampment on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus.

The march started at Charles Library and ended at the Temple Hillel Center for Jewish Life, where protesters shouted from outside the building.

Shortly after the march, Temple President Richard Englert released a message to the Temple community condemning the actions — stating that any students found to be involved will be subject to disciplinary action.

“We are deeply saddened and concerned by these events,” Englert wrote. “Targeting a group of individuals because of their Jewish identity is not acceptable and intimidation and harassment tactics like those seen today will not be tolerated.”
Since Hamas invaded Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the retaliation has resulted in the death of more than 40,000 Palestinians, with around 17,000 of those fatalities being children. Contention between Israel and Palestine supporters on campus is growing as the war rages on. SJP demands Temple to condemn the mass casualties, along with rebuking Zionism on campus.

“It's more about the citizens,” said Michael Hassiepen, a freshman film and media arts major. For me, personally, it's not about Hamas. I don't really support Hamas at all, but for me, it's personally about the citizens that are being denied, hated, abused, and are suffering.”

Following Temple Women’s Soccer's loss to Wake Forest, the Owls seemed lifeless after conceding three goals in a seven minute stretch en route to a four-goal loss. Temple hadn’t scored all season and was looking to finally get in the back of the net and the win column against Iona, who won just a single game in 2023.

Neither happened on Thursday night and the Gaels scored two goals in quick succession, dashing any hope the Owls had of winning. Temple got 10 shots off, but only two were on target and the Owls fell 2-0 to the Gaels Thursday afternoon.

Stan Drayton stepped into a grueling situation from the outside looking in when he took the Temple Football head coaching job in 2021. The Owls were on the heels of their second straight losing season and ended 2021 with multiple important players leaving the program.

The former Texas running backs coach hasn’t turned the Owls around in his two years at the helm, and he enters his third year with a burning-hot seat. However, the Owls’ bad fortunes might not be entirely his fault. Drayton has endured numerous external factors that have impacted the product he has been able to put on the field. Despite the rough patches, Drayton remains excited for what’s to come in 2024.

“I’m excited about this football team,” Drayton said. “I know we’ve embarked on a couple of tough years, but I’m excited about this football team. As we embark on this landscape that we are in, and you hear a lot of the horror stories we have to endure as coaches from time to time, there are some positives to come out of this.’”

Possible Temple, UArts merger falls through - The Temple News 08/29/2024

After almost three months of the University of the Arts’ closure, Temple announced in a statement Thursday that it would be unable to merge with the now-defunct institution. Previously, the university had said they were discussing solutions with external experts.

Since the closing of UArts was announced, 330 former and prospective students have successfully been enrolled at Temple. They have also fast-tracked a new bachelor of fine arts in illustrations and emerging media degree to accommodate UArts students who lost their degree programs.

“After an exhaustive effort by our internal and external team, we were unable to identify a solution that would be in the best interest of Temple’s community and mission,” wrote President Richard Englert, Chief Operating Officer Ken Kaiser and Provost Gregory Mandel in the joint statement.

Walk-in mental health clinic to open near Temple - The Temple News 08/29/2024

Temple students share what topic they hope Kamala Harris and Donald Trump tackle at the Philadelphia-hosted Presidential debate on Sept. 10 at the National Constitution Center.

Current election forecasters project Harris to take a slight lead against Trump, but as witnessed with Joe Biden, poor debate performances can wreak havoc on presidential campaigns. Temple students are looking forward to watching the nation's primary candidates face each other on Sept. 10 in Philadelphia.

“I think this is a great debate and great opportunity for the Democratic Party because Kamala Harris contrasts Donald Trump a lot and contrasts Joe Biden a lot,” said Evelyn Consolla, a freshman hospitality major. “She is a very concise speaker that has her talking points together, I believe, and has a youthful edge over Donald Trump.”

Temple Women’s Soccer had a dreadful four-year stretch under previous head coach Nick Bochette. The Owls went a combined 12-37-11 and suffered 20 straight losses against conference opponents. Bochette was let go in the offseason and Temple decided to hire Robert Morris head coach Chris Shaw to steer the team back in the right direction.

Shaw knows it won’t be an easy rebuild, but has worked to instill a winning mentality in his players. Through Shaw’s first three games, the on-field results have not shown yet. But his players are buying into his coaching style as he looks to lead Temple to their first AAC conference appearance since 2019.

“Ultimately, we think success is getting into the conference tournament,” Shaw said. “I think it’s baby steps to get there. There's got to be gradual improvements throughout the entire season. But we’ve got our eyes on trying to get a bid into that conference tournament.”

Opinion Editor McCaillaigh Rouse urges Temple to provide greater clarification on tuition increases and budget changes through direct communication with students.

Temple Football was tasked with overhauling its secondary last season following key starters transferring and entering the NFL draft. The Owls dipped their toes in the transfer portal to make up for the talent they lost.

The result was more depth in the secondary unit. The room with the most turnover has received some of the highest praise by head coach Stan Drayton this offseason. Two defensive backs earned single digits, and the group is ready to kick the season off in three days against nationally ranked Oklahoma.

“That group has definitely gotten better,” Drayton said. “There's better personnel back there. There's a higher football IQ back there. I just think that with the elevation of talent, you're starting to see and reap the benefits of ex*****on happening at full speed, with not a lot of guys making a whole lot of mistakes.”

Temple student sentenced for sexual abuse, burglary - The Temple News 08/29/2024

A Temple student who stole clothing and touched a woman while she slept will receive a three month probation and a suspended sentence of 180 days for sexual abuse and 15 months for burglary, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

David Kramer-Fried, a current student in the College of Public Health, entered two rooms in an all-female floor at American University, which he attended at the time, on Oct. 31, 2022. He then stole underwear from the dorm rooms and touched a woman while she was sleeping, a source told The Temple News in June.

“In accordance with privacy laws, Temple University cannot comment on the specific situation,” a Temple spokesperson wrote in a statement to The Temple News. “Generally, when a student’s prior disciplinary or criminal history is raised, the concerns are reviewed and, if appropriate, addressed via the Student Conduct Code and university policies.”

When Ian Stewart joined Temple Football in 2022, the program was in a bad place. It was a losing program with a bad team culture. Head coach Stan Drayton was hired that same offseason, and made it a goal to build a new brand. Two years later, the culture is the focal point of the program, with Stewart playing a major role in it.

Stewart earned a single-digit last year by showcasing his leadership skills during fall camp. This past offseason he was the only single-digit to return to the program and has helped his new teammates adjust to Temple while pushing their culture. Stewart has struggled to stay healthy the last two seasons, and despite not making a sustained impact on the field yet, his impact in the locker room has been instrumental.

“His leadership has been critical,” Drayton said. “He’s been one of the guys who has allowed the new guys to transition into our program smoothly. He carries the culture flag. He always preaches the standard of our program and he’s not afraid to cross over position groups to get that point across. Those are traits of our single digits.”

Assistant Opinion Editor Bradley McEntee urges students to be more mindful in their back-to-school shopping and to not prioritize getting new technology or school supplies if they’re not needed.

“Material items don’t guarantee success, but finding effective study habits and acquiring supplies that work best for each individual can have a bigger influence on students’ academic performance. Although the urge to buy new things is understandable, it may cause unnecessary burdens when there are options to repurpose existing supplies or find cheaper alternatives.”

During his first four seasons in a Temple Football uniform, linebacker D.J. Woodbury Sr. sat behind future NFL players Jordan Magee and Yvandy Rigby. The duo taught Woodbury Sr. the ropes for when he inevitably took over following the end of their time in the Cherry and White.

The chance for the senior to prove himself came this offseason and he took his opportunity and ran with it. Woodbury Sr. has solidified himself as a starter during spring and fall camp, trying to continue the cycle of great Temple linebackers heading into 2024.

“Everything [Jordan Magee] taught me, I'm trying to teach younger guys,” Woodbury Sr. said. “Just trying to keep the trend going with great success and in that room and great leadership in that room.”

“[Our goal] is to be an accessible administration that is constantly online and reaching people, so people are reminded that we're here and what we're doing all the time, which is really difficult to put on one person,” Epstein said. “It was important for us to build out a very large comms team.”

Temple Football bolstered its roster in the 2024 offseason, but the Owls have yet to find a quarterback to replace E.J. Warner. Head coach Stan Drayton named Forrest Brock, Evan Simon and Tyler Douglas as the contenders for the spot, but none of them have shown enough to earn the public nomination.

“Our quarterbacks were doing a great job competing,” Drayton said following a team scrimmage on Aug. 16. “It did solidify some things, but we are still getting our depth chart together.”

The Owls are three days away from their season opener at Oklahoma. Who will be the first Owl to line up under center, and how will this battle affect the rest of the season?
