PCDC remains steadfast in our opposition to the arena. We have not been briefed on the legislation. We are in the process of reviewing and responding to this week’s announcements.
Below is a statement from the Chinatown Committee of residents, business owners, and property owners, which PCDC helped form in 2022. The Committee met this week and published the following statement in Metro Chinese Weekly:
“The Chinatown Committee stands firm in our opposition to the 76Place arena proposal.
One week ago, Mayor Parker announced her support for the arena. This announcement has triggered a series of actions and transfers this issue to City Council. Our Committee will reengage our City Council members. We will ask that they join us in opposing the arena.
We came to the conclusion a long time ago that the arena will bring harm to Chinatown. Our conclusion is bolstered by the City's own analysis, which stated that more than 50% of Chinatown's businesses will be harmed.
The two problems of grave concern are traffic and parking and gentrification. Studies of arenas across America show that arenas drive up the cost of real estate. This results in increased rent and potential displacement of our small businesses. Also, there is unanimous agreement among the 76er's traffic plan, the City's traffic study, and public opinion that the arena will cause traffic congestion. Traffic and parking are already causing a decline in patrons for our businesses. The construction of an arena and the operation of an arena will exacerbate the problem.
The arena is a serious threat to Chinatown. The Chinatown Committee's opposition to the arena remains firm.”
🏠📝 The bilingual Housing Counseling and Benefits Access team members here at the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation are here to help! Call our offices to make an appointment to check your eligibility to apply to receive assistance from these two city programs, and others, including a program from PGW if you are facing hardships, and a low-income tax freeze program (LITX). During an appointment, PCDC's experienced staff members can assist in each step of the process.

Community members discussed the importance of participating in our democracy – and our role in electing and connecting with our elected officials – in order to have a voice in our future!
We also enjoyed a delicious dinner from Vietnam Restaurant & Café 🍲
Thank you to Committee of Seventy for sharing voter information with our community in Chinatown!
