Pereira et al. (2022) describe the findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis that evaluated the effectiveness and safety of viscosupplementation for knee osteoarthritis.

The analysis of 169 trials involving 21,163 participants showed that viscosupplementation was associated with a small reduction in pain intensity compared to placebo, but the difference was not clinically significant.

It further emphasizes that viscosupplementation was found to have a higher risk of serious adverse events compared to placebo based on 15 large trials involving 6,462 participants.

In order to test whether the G*E is a safe procedure, a meta-analysis of different results has been done to investigate the safety and effectiveness of the G*E procedure by Taslakian et al., 2023. The study of this paper is significant because there has been a limited study of the safety and effectiveness of the G*E procedure before.

Here are some of the findings from the paper:

The systematic review and meta-analysis included 9 studies on genicular artery embolization (G*E) for knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment, with a total of 270 patients and 339 knees. G*E technical success was 99.7%.

Over a 12-month period, G*E resulted in significant improvements in knee pain visual analog scale (VAS) scores. The weighted mean difference (WMD) ranged from -34 to -39 for the VAS score.

Patients with greater baseline knee pain severity showed greater improvements in knee pain following G*E.

Over 2 years, 5.2% of patients underwent total knee replacement and 8.3% received repeat G*E. Adverse events after the G*E procedure were typically minor, with transient skin discoloration being the most common.

Overall, the results suggest that G*E is a safe procedure that confers improvement in knee OA symptoms.
