How many clamps in this photo? Winner receives a virtual high five ✋

One of the fun and somewhat challenging repairs on a vintage 1954 Martin 00-17, where the pickguard shrinking was causing the top to lift up. Thankfully, it was reglued before any irreversible damage was done.

Electronics were busted on this Ibanez bass for Josh. He was at band practice for church and it just let out on him. He brought it in for a checkup: low, and behold, two wires had come loose, four dirty potentiometers crackling, AND a broken capacitor. If you’re having issues with your instruments electronics—BRING. IT. IN. I’ll make sure it’s taken care of—and have fun while doing it! 💫

Creativity in problem-solving: how to close a crack with a cleat in this Luthier-Build Archtop. Looks like you’re entering a room, but it’s really the inside of this guitar! 😮One “helping hand”, a couple of Neodymium magnets, double-stick tape, hide glue, and the StewMac cleat cutter all worked together ensuring this crack got closed—and STAYED closed!

Bringing this beast back to life for some 🔥 shredding!

After a rewire of the electronics, a new custom cover, hardware restoration, fret seating-glueing-leveling-recrowning-polishing, and a killer Setup with Ernie Ball Power Slinky Strings using my Ernie Ball Power Peg Pro String Winder—this guitar is back in business (and for sale!) BC Rich Mockingbird with Active Duncan Designed pickups.

Scroll for the finished guitar!!!

NEW guitars need a setup when they come home—humidity, temperature, shipping, lack of attention to fine detail, and being played at the store all contribute to that beautiful new guitar being outta whack (especially in HOT DRY AZ).

So, here’s what I setup this week: a brand new Fender American Professional II Stratocaster. Thanks Michael for bringing in your new treasured guitar!

Setups start at $60 to make your guitar play like a dream!!!

The making of a new control cavity cover for one missing on a BC Rich Mockingbird. Bonus: a winking 😉 9V battery from Electro-Harmonix (get one here at the shop!)

Mystery...

Monday? Anyone? Anyone at all?

Short story of the day: A customer brought in a Gibson VOS ES-175 to work on that had a serial number matching to the 1950s. He said he thought it was from the 2000s...After hours of research on a wild goose chase for the truth of the matter, through slogging into the recesses of the internet, and triumphing in the maze of forum threads, we found the guitar ended up being a duplicate (not copy nor fake) serial number of a real Gibson duplicate of that guitar in VOS (Vintage Original Specs). Real duplicate copy that was new of an old guitar. Wow! Not confusing at all. All said and done, what a fantastic guitar I had on the bench. Anybody else run into this kind of thing?

Anyone?

Anybody?

Hollow...body?

Bueller?

Lefty Fender Jazz Bass got a new bone nut this week. Here’s a few steps of the process. Bone nuts provide superior tone, especially when they fit right.

Check out this sweet Gibson Les Paul that got a setup today. If your guitar isn’t playing the way you want it to, expensive or cheap, it may be time to get it set up!

Check this OUT! Took a regular Fender MIM Strat and turned it into something totally new. When my customer came in asking if this could be done, I wasn’t totally sure, but after creative brainstorming we ended with this: three Humbuckers with two Kent Armstrong Mini-Humbuckers in the Neck and Bridge, the center a Fender Humbucker, all wired with a 5-Way Super switch. Gotoh gold locking tuners, custom TNT BWB Pickguard (those guys rock!). Tones anywhere from hot distortion, cool blues, and nasal bright funk!

What will you upgrade on your guitar? Bring on the creativity!

Sweet little upgrade on this MIM Strat—Gotoh Gold 1:16 Tuning Machines. Not only do they work incredible to stabilize your guitar’s tuning, but they look GREAT!

What would you upgrade on your guitar?

“Just a little goes a long way” couldn’t be more the case with this Acoustic guitar. After just a bit of TLC, the fretboard went to looking almost like new! The electronics were broken—got those going, and took a little extra time before getting this lovely guitar restrung and playing!

How does it sound to YOU?

Quick video clip of me playing a Yamaki Custom, over 50 years old. Completely restored: new Tru Oil Finish, Pickguardc Headstock Logo, StewMac Oversized Ebony Bridge, installed JLD bridge System (fixed the belly, the dip, and increased tone, volume AND sustain) and finally, topped off with Ernie Ball Earthwood Acoustic 10’s. Pleased with the way it turned out, talk about bringing new life to something old! I’ll bet this guitar has years and years left to serenade many ears with unwritten sweet melodies.

The process behind creating a new peg head logo from the old one—I decided to try it myself instead of sourcing out the work. One of the most fun things I’ve done yet in Luthiery! The Cricut Air 2, SO cool!

The process of recreating a new logo for this old Yamaki Guitar. What a process it has been! From old finish, sundamaged, to brand new finish with a brand new Gold Logo.

My view whenever I’m talking with a customer or friend at my small shop. So thankful it’s nice and cool outside, and the light is beautiful. I’ve now got a song stuck in my head, “Where the Light Shines Through” by Switchfoot speaking of the difficulty of wounds & scars in our lives allowing the light of Jesus to shine through brightly, through our weaknesses. What a beautiful thing!

Setup on a beautiful Strat—brand new, but needed some attention to detail! After removing what felt like a pound of plastic film, and working on the nut for a while, we have a nice playing and looking guitar!

This bridge did NOT want to let go! Yet in the end (two hours later) sweet, sweet victory!
