It’s a good day to see Antoinette Cauley’s “I Do It For The Hood. Pt. 2” at Modified Arts! Tonight the gallery is going to be immersed in all the energy of the 1st First Friday of the year here on Roosevelt Row. The energy on the streets is palpable and with the gallery located in the heart of Downtown Phoenix we’re excited to present a show that pulses with the stories of this city and Antoinette’s experiences living and working in Berlin. See you tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.! Image: “Every Morning I Wake Up and Throw a Gang Sign” SOLD

A note from the artist:
My great grandfather laid the foundation for my family when he purchased a plot of land in the early 1900’s in South Phoenix, the part of town that Black Phoenecians were segregated to until the 1970’s. He then took that land and divided it among his seven children. My grandmother still lives in her South Phoenix home (built by her late husband) on the land her father gave her. As a third generation South Phoenecian, my roots run deep.
My city as a whole means so much to me for a multitude of reasons. Without their support, I would not be where I am today. With every move I make (including moving to Germany), I always keep in mind the foundation and groundwork I am laying for those who come from where I come from and who look like me. I think about the representation I did not have growing up and know that it is now my responsibility to be the example for so many who will come after me.
So, I decided to pay a clear tribute to my hood with this next body of work as a reminder of who exactly I do everything I do for. It is a message to my community of their power and the possibilities of life. It is also a reminder to myself for those times when I feel lost or unsure- I know I can always bring it back home.
While this body of work is a tribute to my hood, my family and the Black community in South Phoenix, this collection is really a tribute to all of the hoods throughout the United States and the beauty they have created through their adversities and despite the beating down of systemic racism and violent colonization they have endured.

From my Hood to yours, I do it for You.
With love,
Antoinette

That’s a wrap! Thank you for your support of “Experience Line Shape Depth”.

Photos from Modified Arts's post 10/14/2023

Thank you to everyone that has supported and shown love to “Experience Line Shape Depth” at Modified Arts. Tonight is our final night to see the show so stop by for this celebration from 6 to 9 pm where you can enjoy a gathering of artists, bites and beverages, and modern pschedelia music🎉.

I also want to express my admiration for Barbara Kemp Cowlin who has passed recently. Barbara was an incredible artist and warm person that embraced her expression of the uncertainties of life. Through her experimentation in skewed perspective, color and pattern, she found the opportunity to capture the contradictions of happiness and anxieties. I’m so thankful for Barbara’s contributions to art and ultimately to my spirit as well. She is well loved and will be dearly missed. Tonight we celebrate Barbara as well in the company of her work “Askew #133 After The Party’s Over”. - Melissa Koury

“Skewed perspective, quirky colors and patterns with a sense of fun and a tinge of foreboding navigate the anxieties of life with humor and fantasy in my “Askew” series” -Barbara Cowlin

“Experience Line Shape Depth” is continuing its stay! This show is now open until October 14th where we will have an awesome reception night on closing day from 6 to 9 pm. This is also a reminder that we are moving into Fall /Winter hours on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am to 3pm. Thank you to the artists for allowing us to extend this show and thank you to the community for connecting with this exhibition. Featured work is “Jeff Reading” by Andy Brown

Emphasizing the elements of line, shape, and depth, these works take you on a journey between representational and abstract visualizations exploring how we see and feel our world in addition to what is beyond. The further that works are removed from direct representations of reality, the more open our perceptions can be to accessing a range of thought. It’s this openness that allows the viewer to create room for spirituality and the depths of our minds while facing the desire for reassurance to make sense of our experiences. This push and pull effect reminds us that what we see is what we know. So what lies beyond what we see? A line can be drawn around the Earth to make a circle, but a limitless line only exists beyond Earth into an endless and always expanding universe. Yet, we also understand a circle as a polygon with an infinite number of sides. The relationship between representation and abstraction is ever-evolving as we are tied to our senses of what is possible on Earth. Embrace line, shape, and depth with artists:

Andy Brown, Barbara Kemp Cowlin, Ben Willis, Bree Deverill, Daniel Nez, Doddz, Edgar Chávez, Farnaz Mansouri, Ilya Mokhov, James Angel, Luke Watson, Miguel Angel Flores, Rowan Burkam, Steven Allison, Talia J Dudley, Travis Ivey, Travis Rice, Wendy Raisanen

Modified Arts

Modified Arts breaks down the traditional art gallery model in its presentation of contemporary art in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The gallery seeks to present conceptually rigorous work, and strives to connect and cultivate regional, national, and international artists and collectors.

Exhibitions
Modified Arts showcases stimulating and assertive artwork in an accessible and open environment. Our monthly exhibitions feature regional, national, and international artists of all media and seek to provide a fresh perspective for both new and established collectors. Exhibitions include contemporary painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, multi-media, and installation.

History
Kimber Lanning opened Modified Arts in 1999 and developed it into a respected gallery and prominently recognized venue for live music and performance. In 2010, husband and wife team Kim Larkin (Director), and Adam Murray (Associate Director) succeeded Lanning and transitioned the space into a full time contemporary art gallery with select, curated musical performances. Larkin and Murray stepped down in June 2011 to pursue other ventures in the Phoenix arts community. In 2012, artist/curator Jeff Chabot took over operations at Modified Arts. Chabot brings his experience from Los Angeles where he was a board member of FAR (Foundation for Art Resources) and co-founder of D-Block Projects, an experimental art space in Long Beach, CA. In December 2012, following the departure of Chabot, Lanning resumed directorial duties of the gallery. The following April, Connor Descheemaker joined as a gallery assistant and co-curator of the space alongside Lanning. Soon thereafter, Local First Arizona, Lanning’s small-business coalition, took up residence in the gallery, providing a public office space for the nonprofit, and allowing the gallery to be open six days per week for the first time in its history.
