๐ Today's Tip: Halloween and cybersecurity have something in common โ theyโre both SCARY! ๐ป๐๐ง๐งโโ๏ธ
๐ Cybersecurity is an ongoing, 24/7 concern. You may have set up your anti-virus and firewall protection, but is anyone monitoring your network? If not, youโve got a LOT more to be scared of this Halloween than ghosts and vampires!
๐ Check out these scary statistics:
๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ The most common way a hacker gains access to your network is through a simple phishing email.
๐ A cyber attack happens every 39 seconds worldwide.
๐ฒโ
๐ฒ Tech giant Microsoft spends nearly $1 billion per year on cybersecurity.
๐ On average, small businesses invest less than $500 per year in cybersecurity protection.
๐๐ต When FedEx suffered a cybersecurity attack, they lost $300 million in damages and its stock fell by 79% per share.
๐งโโ๏ธ Think it canโt happen to you? Think again. Cybersecurity is not just hocus pocus. It is a real threat to all businesses, big and small.

๐ Today's Tip: NEVER assume youโre too small...it wonโt happen to you...
๐ค Did you know:
๐ 81% of all security breaches happen to small and medium-sized businesses
๐ 97% of breaches could have been prevented with todayโs technology
๐ Only 50% of SMBs have a cybersecurity plan in place, and 32% havenโt changed their plan since the pandemic forced remote operations
๐ Cybercriminals can pe*****te 93% of company networks

๐ Today's Tip: Don't download ANYTHING youโre not authorized to download
โ๏ธ So, you have a big file you need to get over to your accountant YESTERDAY and you canโt get it to send because the file is too big. What should you do? The right thing to do is to contact your IT department (us!) so we can assist by installing a secure, commercial-grade file-sharing application.
โ Hereโs what you donโt want to do: download a free copy of Dropbox or some other file-sharing software without telling us.
If we donโt know about it, we canโt manage it or secure it; so, the golden rule is this: NEVER download any software or application without checking with your IT department first!

๐ Today's Tip: NEVER use the same password twice
โป๏ธ A complex password is a necessity but hard to remember. And with so many websites requiring a password these days, users often reuse the same password again and again with different sites. This is a BAD idea.
๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ When a big company gets hacked (like LinkedIn, for example), the criminals post and sell the username, email, password and confidential information in that account. Since many people reuse the same password, hackers will try that email and password combination across multiple sites, including Amazon, PayPal or other sites where you might store credit card information. This is all accomplished by highly sophisticated software which automates the process.
๐ซ The bottom line is that no matter how much of a pain it is, it is very important to have different passwords for each online account โ and make sure they are truly unique, not just with a โ1โ or โ!โ as an extra character. Hackers will often get access to multiple passwords at once and these patterns become obvious very quickly.

๐ Today's Tip: Donโt just throw out that old computer or device
๐ป Did you know that components used in technology equipment are not safe for landfills? On top of the environmental hazards, unprotected e-waste typically contains a lot of confidential and private information in the form of saved passwords, Internet history and files left on the retired device.
๐จ When youโre ready to dispose of an old computer or server, remove and destroy the hard drives. A drill and hammer usually do the trick just fine. Next, find a local recycling facility where e-waste can be safely disposed of. Consider what personal information may be on a mobile phone, copier or any other device that ever touched your company data. Give serious thought to what data is on any device before you recycle it.

๐Today's Tip: Make THIS account more secure than everything else.
โ ๏ธ Using complicated passwords for everything is annoying; however, the one account you want to make sure has a VERY complicated, long, hard-to-type password is your email account.
Your email is a direct gateway to all your employees, clients, friends, family and associates. If your email is compromised, the hacker not only has access to you but also all the people you associate with.
๐ฒ Another reason to keep your email super secure is because it is used to reset passwords on everything โ bank accounts, financial software, CRMs, etc.

๐ Today's Tip: Double check for HTTPS on websites
๐ฒ Be sure and look for the HTTPS on the websites that you use. The โSโ on the end of HTTP signifies an extra level of security. You should never enter any personal identification, credit card or banking information into a website that is not utilizing HTTPS. If you visit a website that only utilizes HTTP, there is no guarantee that the information exchanged between you and the siteโs server is secure.

๐ Today's Tip: Use a secure file-sharing solution to encrypt data
๐ Make sure if youโre frequently sharing confidential or personal information online that you are using a secure file-sharing solution that will encrypt your data. You should never send sensitive data over email, because of your email is compromised, unauthorized users now have access to that confidential, personal information. Many companies now utilize encrypted file-sharing applications so you can transmit data securely (banks, mortgage lenders, title companies, etc.)
๐ We offer file-sharing solutions to our clients so they have that added level of security and comfort while conducting their day-to-day business.

๐ฏ October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and each day we will be posting a tech tip to help keep you and your business safe.
๐Today's Tip: Donโt use public WiFi until you read this
๐ Weโre all guilty of it: connecting to free public WiFi, whether itโs at the coffee shop, hotel or airport. The temptation to check email and social media is just too strong to resist. So, before you connect to any free-public WiFi, make sure the connection is legitimate.
Itโs not uncommon for hackers to set up fake clones of public WiFi access points to try to get you to connect. Once you do connect, they have access to your computer to find security breaches and steal your information.
๐ฒ The best option is to use your phone as a hot spot or carry your own WiFi device. And if you have to connect, at least donโt log in to critical accounts (like your bank account) or shop online where youโd be entering credit card information.

๐ Today's Tip: Disable Bluetooth when you donโt need it
๐ฒ If you donโt need your Bluetooth on, be sure and turn it off. Hackers can access your device through Bluetooth and steal your personal information. When you have Bluetooth enabled, it is constantly open for connection. All it takes is one vulnerability in one of your programs and your data can be stolen.

๐ Today's Tip: Back up important data
What would happen if your computer stopped working tomorrow? Would you lose access to all your files and information? Do you have a response plan to retrieve your lost data?
โ
Youโve heard us talk about the importance of having a good backup, so make sure you use the 3-2-1 backup rule.
1. Keep 3 copies of data
2. Store 2 of those copies on different storage media
3. Make sure 1 copy is stored off-site and separate from your network

๐Today's Tip: Enable multi-factor authentication to protect your accounts
๐ป Many programs allow you to turn on multi-factor authentication to keep your accounts more secure. MFA allows an extra layer of security to verify that it is actually you accessing the account or program. There are several app choices you can download on your phone to use with MFA, but we prefer Google Authenticator. It generates rotating codes every few seconds, so it is a great deterrent to hackers.

๐ฏ Today's Tip: Avoid opening suspicious emails
๐ You should never open an email if it looks suspicious. Hackers love to go phishing! ๐
A phishing scam is where a hacker poses as a legitimate business or individual to obtain personal information from you such as passwords, date of birth, banking and credit card information. They use this information to steal your identity.
Common red flags to recognize a phishing email include:
๐ฉ You don't recognize the sender
๐ฉ The email was sent at an unusual time (the middle of the night)
๐ฉ The message is a reply to something you never requested
๐ฉ The email has bad spelling or bad grammar
๐ฉ You are cc'd but don't recognize any other recipient
๐ฉ There is a hyperlink to a different website
๐ฉ You are asked to click on a link to avoid a negative action
๐ฉ There is a huge sense of urgency

๐ฏ Today's Tip: Don't just close your browser!
๐ When accessing a banking site online or any other application containing sensitive data, make sure you log out of the site and THEN close your browser. If you simply close your browser, some of the session information that a hacker can use to gain entry is still running in the background. It's super simple to keep this from happening with just one click: LOG OUT.

๐ฏ Today's Tip: Be careful when using social media!
๐ There is no DELETE button on the Internet. Even if you keep your social media private, when relationships change, this goes out the window. Your "friends" can take a screenshot, and that post you made (even if deleted) can come back to haunt you.
๐Your friends' accounts can get hacked or accessed by others. Are you going to be comfortable in 10 years with what you post today? It will be archived forever, so DON'T post anything that could be taken the wrong way. Off-color jokes, pictures and posts about less-than-professional activities are never fully gone.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and each day we will be posting a tech tip to help keep you and your business safe.
๐ฏ Today's Tip: The #1 threat to your security is....YOU (and your employees)!
๐We are our own worst enemies online, inviting hackers, viruses, data breaches, data loss, etc., through the seemingly innocent actions taken every day online. If you aren't monitoring what websites your employees are visiting, what files they're sending and receiving, you could be opening yourself up to a world of hurt. Two things you should do:
1๏ธโฃ Create an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to outline what employees can and cannot do with work devices, email, data and Internet. That way they know how to play safe.
2๏ธโฃ Implement ongoing training (like these tips) to keep security top of mind. We can also run phishing security tests and score your employees. That will truly show if they know how to spot a suspicious email and will make them realize how easy it is to be duped.

๐ฏ Today's Tip: If you installed it, you must update it!
๐ Hackers wake up every day with ONE goal in mind -- to find a new vulnerability in a commonly installed software (like Adobe, Microsoft Office, etc.) to gain access to millions of their users.
That's why these companies frequently issue patches and updates and why it's important to update installed software programs as soon as possible.
๐ปOf course, if you're a client of ours, we're monitoring your network for these updates and installing them for you!

๐ฏ Today's Tip: The #1 way a hacker will get you is...
๐ A weak password is still the #1 way hackers break into your network. Here's what a GOOD password should contain:
โ
A minimum of eight characters
โ
Uppercase and lowercase letters
โ
At least one number and one symbol
โ
No complete words like PaSsWord123 # (a hacker will crack that in seconds)
โ
Never reuse a password for multiple accounts

๐ฏ Today's Tip: Don't let yourself be tracked online
๐ To limit the data gathered on you when surfing the web, trade in your current browser for DuckDuckGo.
Unlike Google and Bing, DuckDuckGo doesn't track you online, your history and searches, linking them back to you. It also won't serve up targeted ads based on your private searches. Of course, that will limit some of the features of the browser, but if privacy is important, then this is the best search engine to use.

๐ฏToday's Tip: Anti-virus is no longer enough!
๐You are never 100% safe from hackers, but if you are only relying on an anti-virus program you are a sitting duck.๐ค
๐ซThe first line of defense is being cautious about opening emails. Don't click on links or open attachments that you are not expecting. Next, you need to upgrade to an advanced security solution that doesn't just scan files but actively monitors for strange behavior on your network and only allows certain trusted programs to run. You also need an advanced firewall on your computer.
