Tips: How to arrange colors on your palette
I often come across these questions from students in class:
1. “Teacher, why do my colors get dirty so quickly on my
palette?”
2. “Teacher, why does it take so long to mix the colors
because I have to search the whole palette for
the other color?”
3. “Teacher, is there a quick and easy way to remember
where each color is on the palette?”
These are common questions asked in class. So this time I would like to give some tips on how I organize my own palette.
If your palette has 12 compartments, you can start by deciding where to arrange the three primary colors red, yellow and blue. Then place similar or related colors next to these primary colors. For example, you could place red-orange to the left of red, followed by orange and yellow. To the right of red, you could place red-purple, followed by blue-purple, blue, blue-green, green, yellow and yellow-orange to create a smooth transition from warm to cool colors in a color wheel layout.
If your palette can hold 18 colors, I recommend starting with 15 commonly used base colors and leaving 3 empty spaces for experimental or special colors. This way you can keep your regular set of 12 or 15 colors and still have room to add and replace new colors to experiment with and create more diverse color combinations.
