Join us in celebrating National Piña Colada Day at Phoenix Coquí, where we proudly serve the island's national drink just like it was first crafted. Every sip tells a story of Puerto Rican flavor and flair. Do you know how this iconic cocktail was born?
The Piña Colada, a beloved tropical cocktail, has a fascinating history rooted in the vibrant culture of Puerto Rico. Its origins can be traced back to the 19th century when Puerto Rican sailors sought refuge on the island of Culebra. Legend has it that these seafarers would indulge in a concoction made from fresh pineapple, coconut, and rum, providing a refreshing escape from their maritime adventures. Fast-forward to 1954, and the piña colada gained international recognition when a bartender named Ramón "Monchito" Marrero created the official recipe at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan. This delightful frozen cocktail made of creamy coconut milk, pineapple, and rum was an instant success and, as a result, was named Puerto Rico's national drink in 1978. Since then, this delicious blend of tropical flavors has become an iconic symbol of Puerto Rico's rich heritage and a beloved cocktail enjoyed worldwide, transporting drinkers to the sun-soaked beaches of Puerto Rico with every sip.

Happy National Food Truck Day!
We've come a long way from our early years, but we never forget where we came from. At the beginning of it all was our dream to bring the flavors of Puerto Rico to Phoenix with the first ever Puerto Rican food truck. In 2013 thanks to Rock Phoenix who gave us a home for 5 years, we were able to do just that!
With your support, you helped make our dreams come true and grow to so much more! Having our own restaurant now helps us appreciate those early days so much more! We're proud to see our food now being featured in newspapers and magazines, and it all began with a dream and a 7 X 14 foot food trailer.
*Fyi, The food truck is taking a break for the summer, but you can book us for private events starting in October.

"This is a must-go location, it's amazing food and the drinks are great. I'm Puerto Rican and from New York, my girlfriend surprised me with the restaurant, and it was not disappointing, I felt I was eating my mother's food, my eyes rolled back on the first bite."
It's a great day for Puerto Rican food in the Valley! We were just named one of the best places to dine in 2024. To be on this list next to so many great Valley restaurants is a great honor!

The coquí (ko-kee) frog is more than just a tiny frog for us Puerto Ricans – it's a beloved symbol deeply rooted in our culture and identity. When you visit Puerto Rico, the coquí's distinctive "co-quí, co-quí" call fills the air, especially at night, creating a comforting background sound that lets you know you are home.
The coquí has become a symbol of Puerto Rican pride and resilience. Despite its small size, the coquí is mighty in its significance. It represents the island's lush biodiversity and resilience, echoing the strength and determination of the Puerto Rican people through challenges and adversity. When we started our food truck and named it Phoenix Coqui, we felt the coquí embodied our spirit and determination. Small, but loud, we made our presence known.
The Taino people, the indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico before the arrival of Europeans, revered the coquí frog. In Taino culture, the coquí was associated with the spirit world and believed to bring good luck. Today, the coquí remains intertwined with our heritage and is reflected in our logo, which incorporates the Taino coquí symbol.
Puerto Ricans here in Arizona also maintain a strong connection to the coquí. Whether it's through artwork, music, literature, or everyday conversations, the coquí serves as a nostalgic link to our homeland. It symbolizes our longing for Puerto Rico and our sense of identity wherever we may be in the world. For many in the diaspora, the coquí is a cherished emblem of cultural pride, often used to evoke memories of home and community.
The coquí frog is not just a creature of nature but a cultural icon that embodies the spirit of Puerto Rico – resilient, proud, and deeply connected to its roots.
