League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Phoenix

Strictly nonpartisan, but wholeheartedly political, we work to influence policy through advocacy. Officers were elected; a constitution and bylaws were adopted.

Here’s a little taste of our local League history, taken from research compiled by Sandy Kazeta for a skit in the mid-90s. In November, 1941, the Phoenix League was established when 21 women met at the Westward Ho Hotel in downtown Phoenix. Dues were established at $2.00 annually. The first president was Mrs. Frank Brophy. Almost immediately the group participated in a state meeting with League me

URGENT: The League of Women Voters of Arizona is calling for Arizona Supreme Court Justice William Montgomery to recuse himself in cases brought by or against Arizona for Abortion Access (AAA) because no reasonable Arizonan can have faith that the Arizona Supreme Court or its rulings about AAA are fair and unbiased as long as Justice Montgomery is participating based on his previous statements and recusal.

For all those concerned with having a fair and unbiased judicial system please take the time to read and share this letter.

This podcast episode discusses one of the best ways for individual voters to choose the government, today and tomorrow, that most directly impacts their lives. By voting on down-ballot races, the voter chooses local leadership and speaks out about local issues that impact them daily; these local leaders can then very likely move into state and national leadership. It is one of the best ways to make YOUR voice heard!

HCR2056 is an anti-voter extremist’s wish list. The amendments restrict voting accessibility, create more administrative burdens to the detriment of voters, and leave election officials with little to no support. Anti-democracy actors clearly want to make voting harder and criminalize pro-democracy advocacy. HCR2056 is packed with voter suppression provisions and must be stopped before it reaches the ballot.

Contact your state legislators ASAP and express your strong opposition to HCR2056 currently being considered by the Arizona state legislature. Find your legislator: https://www.azleg.gov/findmylegislator

05/13/2024

LWVAZ is watching a potential striker to HCR2056 that would eliminate voters’ ability to drop off their mail-in ballot on the weekend before election day or on election day itself. Over 25% of voters used dropboxes during this time frame in 2022. We oppose this attempt to impose restrictions on voters’ ability to cast their ballot.

Timeline: We will know the proposed language on Tuesday. On Thursday, it will be heard in the Senate Elections Committee. The bill is likely to be heard on the floor of the House and Senate the following week.
Reminder: Concurrent resolutions don’t need the governor’s signature and will go directly on the ballot to be voted on in November if passed by both legislative chambers.

Opportunity Arizona is organizing a mobilization to oppose this amendment. Follow link to take part.

We invite members of our community to help us write candidate questions that reflect voters' concerns for the upcoming primaries.
VOTE411.org is the League of Women Voters' digital, nonpartisan, trusted source for candidate and election information. It is a publicly available one-stop shop for candidate and voting information that allows voters to see just the races on their ballots or anywhere in the state or in other states. The guide is live from shortly before the start of early voting until election day.
Candidates are invited to participate by answering questions customized for each race. The questions we ask candidates running for office should reflect the concerns of all voters. To that end, we ask our colleagues, neighbors, friends, family, and coalition partners to help us by suggesting questions you want candidates to answer to help you decide for whom to vote.
Please invite the members of your personal and professional networks to contribute to this effort by completing this form.

Arizona Supreme Court Revives 1864 Abortion Ban
in the case of Planned Parenthood et al v. Kristin Mayes/Hazelrigg

The League of Women Voters of Arizona, which filed an amicus brief in this case, condemns the decision by the Arizona Supreme Court to reinstate the territorial-era abortion ban enacted in 1864. Women and those who may become pregnant have lost all rights to reproductive freedom in Arizona.

Arizona voters who believe in reproductive freedom must sign the Arizona for Abortion Access petition to amend the state constitution in November to enshrine abortion rights.

From ASU Center for the Study of Race and Democracy:

Join us on April 13, 2024 as we launch our second decade of Delivering Democracy programming with the award-winning journalist and courageous civil rights champion Charlayne Hunter-Gault. This year, as the nation marks the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Decision, we have the opportunity to reflect on the vision and leadership that paved the way towards equal education opportunities in America. This year’s program, which features CSRD Director Lois Brown in conversation with Ms. Hunter-Gault, promises to be a revelatory, inspiring and moving dialogue about community resilience, education, journalists as agents of change, national and global civil rights and the power of bearing witness.
