We were quoted in the in their story about the closing the South Rim for overnight stays due to the pipeline break. I guess they saw our post and gave us a call for some backcountry perspective. 😎 Link to the entire article is in our bio.
HAVASUPAI UPDATE: As of Aug 29, the Havasupai Tourism Office has announced that the campground and lodge will be closed through September 30th. Spun positively, the campground and lodge will reopen October 1st! This is much earlier than expected, so yay!
For details on how this affects your reservation during this time, please refer to the Havasupai Tribe Tourism official page.
IMPORTANT UPDATE - Starting tomorrow at Grand Canyon’s South Rim…
will implement Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim starting the afternoon of Thursday, August 29, due to a series of four significant breaks in the 12½ mile-long Transcanyon Waterline that supplies water from the canyon for use in the park. Since July 8, the park has faced challenges with water supply, and currently, no water is being pumped to either the South or North Rim.
In response, the following measures will be enacted for the South Rim for the foreseeable future:
Overnight Guest Lodging: Effective Thursday, August 29, all park concessions will halt overnight accommodations. This includes hotel facilities operated by Xanterra, such as El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, and Phantom Ranch, as well as Delaware North’s Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village. Overnight hotel accommodations located outside the park in the town of Tusayan will not be impacted by changes in park operations.
Dry Camping: Only dry camping will be permitted. Spigot access at campgrounds on the South Rim will be turned off, though faucets in bathrooms will remain operational. Water spigot access will be available at the Mather Campground check-in kiosk.
No fires will be allowed on the South Rim and inner canyon areas. Fire restrictions prohibit all wood burning and charcoal fires, including campfires, warming fires, and charcoal barbeques. For more information on fire restrictions, visit the park’s Fire Information webpage.
Operational Services: The park will remain open for day use. All South Rim food and beverage services, the Grand Canyon Clinic, and the Post Office will remain open. The North Rim’s Grand Canyon Lodge, and other North Rim visitor services such as the Campground, will remain open.
Inner Canyon: Water is OFF at Supai Tunnel, Manzanita, Cottonwood, Bright Angel Campground, Phantom Ranch and Boat Beach. Be sure you have a water filter!
I am sure you are all aware that has been closed indefinitely due to the damage done from the flash flood of August 22nd. Events such as these happen often and are an unfortunate consequence of canyons and the monsoon season.
While details of the actual damage are not yet released, this flood reminds us of the flash flood that occurred Aug 16, 2008. It altered the landscape of the area, including re-routing Havasu Creek and creating 2 new waterfalls. More than 450 hikers, campers and residents were evacuated. The area remained closed until June of the following year.
Hopefully, the damage is not as great and clean up and repairs will take a lot less time.
In the meantime, Havasupai is requesting donations of goods to help with clean up and feed the residents and animals in the village of Supai. You can find this list and where to deliver it on the Havasupai Reservation website - www.havasupaireservations.com or the Havasupai Tribe Tourism page.
It isn’t the first time and this won’t be the last. Just hoping for a quick recovery.
