I was dared to make a controversial twitter post, so here it is: A financial plan is not based on a single asset. You can have a 401k, a roth ira, an annuity, cash value life insurance, individual stocks and even real estate.

I can't help help you with most of these, but I can help you with life insurance and annuities.

There are two truths that "everyone" knows about insurance:

1) It'll never cost less than it will today
2) Nobody has enough insurance.

As far as the first one, it's actuarially true. The actuary's have tables to show how much insurance will cost for a given age profile. The second, while true, is not entirely feasible. The trick is to find the balance, to have the insurance that will cover what needs to be covered without spending so much that you cannot afford anything else. What do I mean? (I'm a life and health insurance agent, so I will be writing from that perspective)

Try to insure against things that have a fair probability of happening. For example, the odds of a piano falling on your head are pretty slim (although it could be covered by the Accidental Death Benefit rider on your life insurance policy). On the other hand, most people are related to someone who has had cancer, so having a cancer policy would be a good investment. Both are policies that I will gladly help you find, but if I had to prioritize the two, I would recommend the cancer policy.
