It's a new school year and a perfect time to announce our third annual SCREENSHOT: Asia Film Festival, taking place October 4-8, 2023. We have amazing films from all over Asia--including Iran, Indonesia, South Korea, China, Japan, and many other places! We are so excited about what we are going to show you this year! We'll be rolling out the schedule and telling you more about the movies in the coming weeks, but meanwhile, mark your calendar!

We're still deep in the summer break but, if you're looking for films to watch right now, we're happy to partner with the Midwest USA Chinese Chamber of Commerce--Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Chinese Cultural Center and others to offer a pre-screening of the film SIGHT, starring Terry Chen from THE EXPANSE and Greg Kinnear (AS GOOD AS IT GETS)! Screenings will be on Pitt campus on Aug 5-6. Tickets are FREE but register if you'd like to attend. Click on the flyer for more information and for the QR code for the film. Screening of the hit film The Orphanage is TONIGHT at 5 PM in 4130 Posvar Hall followed by a Q&A with director Shahrbanoo Sadat! The Orphanage follows a 15-year-old Quodrat (Quodratollah Qadiri) and his journey from the streets of Kabul to a juvenile detention called “the orphanage” where he daydreams of action-packed Bollywood heroics while the Soviets maintain control and the Mujahideen fight to take their land back.

Vocaloid and DMT (desktop music) phenomena will be discussed to illustrate how interactive media has empowered fan bases.

Even though we are late, we want to post these pictures from our stunning Byeonsa performance. A huge thank you (again) to the ASC staff, the Korea Foundation, the Korea Society, NRIEP and the Korean Heritage Room, the Dr. Chung Soo Yoo Korean Studies Endowment, and all the people at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. It was a massive success and we couldn’t have done it without your support!

During the silent film era in Korea, movie screenings were accompanied by live music and narrators called Byeonsa. This special screening of Crossroads of Youth invites you to encounter the film just as Korean audiences did in 1934. The Korean Film Archive and director Kim Tae-yong have reimagined the traditional Byeonsa theatrical event, bringing together the film, live musicians, actors, and narration for a dynamic multimedia experience.

IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING SCHEDULED FILMS: Saturday, October 2nd’s film screening will be Pushing Hands by Ang Lee! Pushing hands is a 3-time Golden Horse award winner and a 1992 Berlin International Film Festival nominee that details protagonist, Mr. Chu’s, struggles of living in New York with Americanize son Alex.
