As you enter the Garden, Hummingbird & Flower awaits in a bed of one of the Ruby-throated Hummingbirdβs favorite plants, Cardinal Flower (ππ°π£π¦ππͺπ’ π€π’π³π₯πͺπ―π’ππͺπ΄)!
This sculpture is made of walnut, poplar, locust and cedar wood and stands over 10 feet tall. A
hummingbird is featured hovering above a tubular flower, exemplifying this fascinating mutualistic relationship. Hummingbirds seek out flower shapes that many other pollinators, like bees and butterflies, are not able to access. Their long beak and tongue allow them to pollinate these plants, meaning many plants rely on hummingbirds to survive.
Hummingbird & Flower is part of David Rogersβ Big Bugs + Pollinators, on display at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden through September 15.

David Rogersβ Big Bugs + Pollinators starts with a grand entrance in the Welcome Center as visitors encounter the first of 10 sculptures, Butterfly. π¦
Butterflyβs body is made from black walnut wood, and wings are made from plate fungi mosaic. These materials create a lovely, textured effect with a pattern reminiscent of the complex wing designs found in many butterfly species.
This sculpture is over 7 feet tall, hovering above a display of its native plant companion, Coneflower (ππ€π©πͺπ―π’π€π¦π’ spp.)
These perennials can be found adorned with a wide variety of pollinator species, but are a particular favorite for butterflies.
