๐Ÿšจ Pittsburgh is in the midst of an extreme heat wave, so we want to remind our pregnant community members to take extra care as the temperatures rise! ๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿšฐ๐Ÿ’ง Stay hydrated! Beat the heat by sipping on water throughout the day, regardless of your activity level.

๐ŸงŠ Eat and snack healthy! Avoid hot and heavy meals, which can increase your body temperature.

โ˜€๏ธ Combat swelling! Elevate your feet whenever possible, especially after a day of activity.

โ™จ๏ธ Exercise smart! Remember to listen to your body and take breaks when needed.

๐ŸŒ€ Beat the heat! Keep cool by seeking shade and dressing in loose, breathable fabrics. Stay indoors during peak sun hours, limiting outdoor activities to morning and evening hours.

โ›ฑ๏ธ Travel safely!

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Save your skin! Protect your body and baby bump from harmful ultraviolet rays by staying indoors during peak sun hours and using SPF 30 or higher sunscreen when you need to be outdoors.

โ—๐ŸŒ‡ Stay informed! Check local news reports for heat alerts and safety updates. Find out if your community offers cooling (or heat-relief) centers.

The 2024 Pennsylvania LGBTQ Health Needs Assessment is now open for responses until August. All LGBTQ Pennsylvanians who are 13+ are encouraged to take the survey, which takes about 25 minutes.

The assessment is a biennial survey that evaluates health needs and disparities among LGBTQ people in the state, and collects data on health care experiences, nutrition, exercise, to***co use, drug and alcohol use, sexual health, mental health, and food & housing security.

https://survey.alchemer.com/s3/7444161/ce36f60ecce3

The assessment is funded by the state Department of Health and administered by the Bradbury Sullivan LGBT Community Center and Public Health Management Corporation.

โ€œThe purpose of the assessment is to strengthen the health and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community,โ€ state Health Department Communications Director Barry Ciccocioppo said in an emailed statement.

โ€œThe assessment aims to fill the void of available research on LGBTQ+ health by identifying health disparities and barriers to care and exploring possible strategies for addressing these issues.โ€

Tawniece (Tawn) has been in the healthcare field for over 12 years, with a focus in dialysis care for the past 8 years. In 1993, the UN General Assembly decided in a resolution that May 15th of every year should be observed as The International Day of Families. This day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

As the 30th anniversary of the resolution, 2024's theme is "Families & Climate Change"!

Climate change negatively impacts the health and well-being of families through increased pollution, while extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change, such as hurricanes, droughts and floods, often lead to forced displacement and loss of livelihoods for families and individuals. Such events impact agricultural productivity and access to water, intensifying hunger and vulnerability. They cause economic disruption in industries sensitive to climate impacts such as agriculture and fisheries.

Without drastic action, adaptation to and mitigation of the impacts of climate change will become increasingly difficult and costly.

Empowering families through education, changing consumption habits, and advocacy is critical for meaningful and effective climate action. Families pass values across generations, so instilling sustainable habits and climate awareness in families from an early age is important. Integrating circular economy principles into early childhood education can help build a sustainable economic model based on minimizing waste and regenerating natural resources. Families as consumers and advocates can drive the transition to a circular economy.

The 2024 International Day of Families aims to raise awareness of how climate change impacts families and the role families can play in climate action. Through family and community initiatives, we can foster climate action with education, access to information, training and community participation.
