We’re happy to be featuring the work of artist Nancy Smeltzer in our shop!

Nancy became a bird watcher on her many trips to Chincoteague Island, VA. Many of her pots are decorated with images of nature and the birding world. Her work is thrown, altered and decorated with birds of the natural world. She continues to be fascinated with the way the woodfire, ash, and soda lend their finishing touches to embellish the work. She likes to envision most of her work on the table or in the hand to celebrate the everyday ritual of eating and drinking. She fires in Manabigama, Boury Box and Joe Finch Wood Kilns.

Stop by to check out the full selection of Nancy's pieces we have in stock, and take one home today!

Tina Williams Brewer: Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Award Established Artist 06/27/2024

We’re excited for Tina Williams Brewer for her recent achievement of receiving the Carol R. Brown Achievement Award as their 2024 Established Artist.

As the Established Artist honoree, Brewer is recognized for a remarkable body of work produced over decades, and for her sterling reputation across a wide spectrum of her peers.

Brewer began quilting in 1986, weaving symbolism into her works to tell stories on issues of women and children, spirituality of the African American culture, generational healing, spirituality and her personal experiences associated with them. She also works in artistic community outreach, sharing her knowledge to encourage others, especially young people, to create and share art.

Co-sponsored by The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments since 2012, the awards program highlights the importance of the arts to the Pittsburgh region. It is based on the two foundations’ shared commitment to providing career-advancement opportunities to Pittsburgh-based artists. The importance of nurturing artistic talent and retaining artists locally has been championed by award namesake Ms. Brown, who was president of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust from 1986 to 2000. She led the revitalization of Pittsburgh’s Downtown arts district, which remains core to the vitality of the region’s cultural community.

We’re extending the deadline for our Ceramic Residency Program until July 1st!

It’s not too late to apply to join our growing list of artists served through our residency program!

Every year PCA&M offers one 8-9 month artist residency in ceramics for emerging ceramic artists looking to take their work to the next step!

Our intention with the Ceramic Artist-in-Residence program is to continue to expose our immediate ceramic community (both internal and the greater Pittsburgh area) to fresh new perspectives in technique and discipline within the ceramic arts, in turn also helping to create greater visibility for the participating artist.

Our program is intended to foster greater community engagement between the resident and other interested parties through:

• Shared studio practice
• Interaction with members & students
• Paid teaching opportunities
• Sales opportunities through our retail shop and markets
• A mid-residency solo exhibition in our gallery space.

You can learn more about the program, as well as information on how to apply through the link below!

Last Sunday was the unveiling of the Healing with Nature collaborative mural created by artist-in-residence Laura Jean McLaughlin and community members impacted by the October 27th, 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue attack. We are so proud to have supported this artist-in-residency project through our Artists in Schools & Communities program, in conjunction with the Arts in Education partnership of the PA Council for the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Other project partners included Lively Pittsburgh, 10/27 Healing Partnership, Jewish Family and Community Services of Pittsburgh, Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.

Read the article in Pittsburgh Union Progress to learn more about the project, artist-in-residence Laura Jean McLaughlin, the participants, and the impact this project had on the community.

Today is the last day of our membership drive! Membership is our way of giving back to those who support us through various yearly benefits, including discounts on classes and workshops and opportunities to exhibit and sell work!

We spoke to long-time students and members, Jude and Sam Gentile, about their experiences at PCA&M and how a membership with PCA&M has benefitted them!

“As a former watercolor painting instructor at Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media, I appreciate the importance of PCA&M and the value of membership. My husband, Sam, and I have taken a variety of classes, and membership has helped to offset the costs. Sam states, and I agree, that PCA&M has been a welcoming place for us, and this attitude is reflected leadership and staff at the organization. In addition, the instructors are very knowledgeable and willing to share their expertise. It has been a unique experience to independently create art together in such a nourishing environment. We both look forward to taking more classes together, and meeting more new friends. We will both have pieces included in PCA&M's Member and Student Exhibition, as well.”

Membership levels range in cost from $30/year for a student membership to $450/year for a benefactor membership. Each membership level grants you the following benefits:

• $25 off classes & camps, $15 off open studios, and $5 off workshops
• 10% discount in the PCA&M Shop
• $25 discount on all events as a vendor/artist
• Eligibility to jury artwork into exhibitions and retail sales, including the Shop and artist markets
• Access to artist services and fiscal sponsorship
• Recipient of PCA&M newsletter
• Benefactor Level Only: One free class per year (up to a $350 value)

PCA&M wants Pittsburgh to be a place where artists can continue to thrive. We’re dedicated to nurturing local artists of all experience levels through classes, studio access, professional development, and economic opportunities including jobs, funding, and exhibition and retail sales. In 2024, we estimate we will put over $300,000 directly into the pockets of working artists in Pittsburgh through our programs.

We have been very lucky to have started working with
Cassandra Dunphy-Lieb this past year! Cassandra taught a handful of our summer art camps, vended in our yART Sale, and has become a member in our ceramics studio.

“I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Media this year, teaching summer camps, taking classes, firing my ceramics, and participating in my first artist market. I cannot begin to explain how valuable this experience was for me. For those who have known me for a long time, you know I've always loved being creative. This summer completely reignited that spark. On top of that, I've made so many new connections and friendships with amazing people. I'm so excited to continue exploring this avenue and sharing my creativity with the world!

It gives us great pride to see artists like Cassandra thriving in their artistic practices through the support of our programs. We can't provide this level of support without your help. You can donate to our end-of the-year campaign through the link below and support Pittsburgh artists today.
