From the time I was a kid living across the street

from a very agreeable six year old named Jennifer, who let me smear her face with my very first handmade face mask made of ink berries and baby powder. That is no joke her mother was not happy with me, all the way to adulthood when I smeared my own face with a spicy gem made of turmeric and lemon juice, which turned my face completely yellow. I have since refined my talents. I began in a boutique salon in the heart of Oakland, PA where all the colleges sit in Pittsburgh. The salon was an Aveda shop. I went to all the classes, learning to mix all the oils and elixirs, I loved the word elixir, and I loved all of it. The clientele was interesting to me. Most of the clients were therapists, yoga instructors and herbalists. They taught me much. Across the street was this beautiful shop that sold meditation bowls and books . One of the men working there was a Chinese medicine man who made tinctures, herb remedies and teas. He barely spoke English, but always was smiling and serving you his teas in beautiful little porcelain cups. I was in heaven. This was what I wanted to do. I wanted to live there…. and I did . It got to the point where my boss would literally call the shop and have them send me back. Years later I opened my own boutique salon and day spa. I started small by making my own soaps and bath salts. I really wanted to do more, but I had to learn more. I went to school to be a herbalist and a year later I was. I do all my favorite remedies, teas and bath fun, but I also make herb tinctures for a supplement company… and I love it all." Lunesea Botanicals owner, Marla Degenhardt. home
