DETOUR is pleased to welcome back Umfang and Oscar Celedon to the decks of Hot Mass for a summer evening of groovy, psychedelic techno.

One of NYC's finest techno DJs, Umfang is a recognized veteran well-respected for her fluency in techno—not just as a DJ, but also for her engagement with its political history and contemporary social contexts. Her 7-hour marathon vinyl set at Hot Mass in 2016 fully showcased her abilities as a selector who moves both body and mind, proving that the true skill of a DJ isn’t necessarily what one plays, but how.

Opening support will be provided by Oscar Celedon, the Pittsburgh-based Santa Marta, Colombia native who has made a name for himself slinging Caribbean-influenced rhythms and psychedelic melodic musings via productions and DJ sets aimed at inducing deep groove hypnosis.

5th Saturdays at Hot Mass are a collaborative effort and for this one we’re highlighting 3 local selectors.

First up we’ll have multimedia artist, A.E. under her Funeral Parade or Roses, alias. Most recently the FPoR alias has been home to A.E.’s creative endeavors that encompasses audio, text, illustration and performance by her and her various co-conspirator. The alias synthesizes the various audio, visual and literary inspirations that inform A.E.’s work. Be sure to check out recent releases by A.E. on labels like Lost Soul Enterprises, Left Hand Path and Tram Planet, along with writing via her Seith Communiti platform.

Next up we have the return of up and coming selector Kay Chin. When not behind the booth Kay is a lauded animator, illustrator, designer and sometimes Chef. Kay is definitely someone to keep an ear out for as they continue to evolve as an artist and DJ. Stand out sets at their collaborative Minka nites and at the recent Discoteca Pegação* pop up, have caught our ears.

To round out the line-up we have none other than Liftgate. A true pillar in the scene and when not educating, he continually champions local artists through sound reinforcement, light and Radio. His Press play and Club Dreams series on Blast Radio have been key outlets for his own sonic explorations and that of peers in the scene. Plus if you missed the release of his "it's all love, it always has been" album. Don’t sleep on it, woven within each track, you can truly hear the love.

Tonight!

As we step closer to the official start of summer, we’ll be keeping things hot here at Mass. For June this year, DETOUR keeps up the temps with Atlanta super producer Nikki Nair and Columbus' Brenner.

Nikki Nair:
In the past 5 years Nikki Nair has quickly established himself as in demanded producer. Early stand out EPs on labels like Scuffed Recordings and Banoffe Pies garnered attention from fans of UK Bass, but that only covers a part of his production skills. As a consummate dance music fan Nair pulls from a wide range of genres and his ever growing discography embraces electro, techno, ambient, ghetto tech to name a few. Recent collaborations and tours with Hudson Mohawke has further shed light on Nair’s skills in the studio and behind the decks. Come with an open mind and a comfortable pair of footwear, because we’re going to work.

Brenner
The Columbus mainstay has been an active figure in his local scene, collaboratively organizing the Head Cleaner parties (not to be confused with PGH’s Cleaner tapes) since 2017. As a DJ, Brenner is an ardent student of dance music and pulls heavily from Midwest dance influences encompassing house, techno and electro, but certainly doesn’t limit himself. Self-released EPs under his previous “Coma Coz” alias have provided him with ample room for practice and experimentation. That now sees him as a seasoned producer, landing releases/ tracks on NYC’s Major Records and Detroit's Junted, to name a few. Brenner is definitely one to keep an ear open for as he continues to define himself as DJ and producer.

DJ Love is a Philadelphia and Jersey-raised DJ and producer, currently based Philly. With a passion for curating unforgettable experiences, DJ Love has become a prominent figure in the music scene, known for their dynamic DJ sets and empowering events. As the curator of CUNTY events, DJ Love has been dedicated to bringing something greater to the world of art uplifting and empowering their BIPOC & LGBTQ community. With a strong belief in the power of music to transcend boundaries, DJ Love strives to open minds and create safe dance spaces where community can come together and be free.

HUNY XO
HUNY XO (huny young) is a DJ, event curator, and king of all trades soundtracking and producing events via the Mostbeautifullest collective. Bred in New York, NY and currently residing in Pittsburgh (named Person of the Year in Music 2021 by Pittsburgh City Paper), huny's work in music and the visual arts is rooted in exalting Black women & QTBIPOC communities. As a co-founder and the Experience Lead of Honcho's Q***r Fam Fund, as well as consulting on diversity outreach for other festivals, huny's mission to expand visibility and access in nightlife culture is a through-line in everything they tackle. HUNY XO sets are genre-defying: ballroom beats, house, techno, dancehall, hip-hop...anything with a nasty beat and embedded in Blackness can get it.

BASED GRACE
Based Grace is a multi-genre DJ known for effortlessly transitioning from go-to anthems to brand new tracks to deep cuts—whatever it takes to go keep it poppin. Based in their hometown of Pittsburgh, PA after a stint in Brooklyn, NY, Grace's ear for quality music, combined with their unique style and addictive energy, makes them an increasingly established favorite in The Steel City and beyond.

DØN is the alias of B Smith, a longtime DJ and emerging producer from Columbus, OH. Their influences include, but are not limited to: juke, footwork, jit, jersey/baltimore club, baile funk, kuduro and techno.

Madame Trio:
Madame Trio is a local DJ, dancer, choreographer and educator. As a regular both in the booth and on the dance floor, Madame Trio knows just what to play to get people moving. Setting off parties by local promoters like Mostbeautifullest, Make Sure You Have Fun, Oasis and Everything the Light Touches.

DETOUR welcomes Haruka to the decks for an extended textural and ravy techno set full of immersive and rippling rhythms. The Japanese DJ is a resident and co-organizer of the legendary Terror party alongside DJ Nobu and also runs the label Protection to explore the boundaries of contemporary dance music. Recently named a top 25 breakthrough DJ of 2023 by Mixmag, Haruka’s decade plus experience DJing and shaping the Japanese and global techno scene resulted in bookings at Berghain, Basement, and Atonal.

On opening duties is Associate, a DC-based vinyl enthusiast and organizer of Midwest Plenty, followed by a live hardware set from local gear aficionado Jak.

Gear up for our last night of the year, New Years Eve Eve. This December 30th we've put together a B2B2B2B2B line up of residents and local all-stars!

Starting up the night will be the Hoagie Hero, Jarrett Tebbets B2B LongTurn mainstay KoopMuzic! Following them is a DJ who is known for melting floors under a pink and blue neon... Jellyfish's very own Formosa, going b2b with JT and AC on either ends. Finally, to take us into the early hours, we'll have a dynamic blend of Honcho's Aaron Clark B2B Sweet Abyss' Malzof!

DETOUR is incredibly thrilled to welcome Vladimir Ivkovic to Hot Mass. One of the most exciting and influential figures in contemporary underground electronic music, Vladimir Ivkovic is a DJ, a storyteller, a connoisseur and, most importantly, an artist. At his essence, the Belgrade born artist is someone with a particularly unique talent for selecting records and weaving them into a larger and often unusually compelling narrative.

Whether he’s broadcasting on the radio or piloting the dance floor, Vladimir Ivkovic is someone who has been pushing the boundaries of electronic music since the 80s by exploring notions of beauty and tranquility through unusual frequencies.

On opening duties is (Left Hand Path), an Iranian-American DJ and producer based in NYC. Teeyam’s sound traverses zones of techno/house, electro, breaks, wave, and brooding psychedelia.

This Saturday!

This month DETOUR does their night a week early, ahead of Honcho campout. On August 12th, they're calling on members of the Dyspheric and Uhaul Disco crews for a night of debuts and returns!

Many of you know, but for those that don't... over the past few years, respectively the two crews have been working both in the club and diy spaces challenging what a party could be. All the while heavily focusing on booking QTBIPOC artists across the city and region.

Returning to the booth and representing Dyspheric we have DJ, producer, visual artist, and event organizer XC-17. As a DJ XC-17's are sets bold and spontaneous, creatively spanning a range of genres.

Then debuting and representing Uhaul Disco we have Johnny Zoloft. The percussionist & educator is no stranger to the hot Mass dance and knows how to turn a dance floor and get even the pickiest of club goers haulin' ass.

Finally returning to represent both crews is artist, musician, DJ and much more Samira Mendoza. Described as that club bitch here to make your mind spin n' your b***y pop with their genre bending blends.

For June this year DETOUR shines the spot light on some local and regional talents! First up we’ll NYC’s DJ Wawa alongside pittsburgh very own DOM.

DJ Wawa has been sprinkling magic on New York City’s vibrant underground techno scene for a few years now, watching it flourish from the center of the dancefloor. They’re a regular fixture at the city’s best parties, and a familiar voice on Twitter, uplifting the “loose international q***r and QTPOC techno underground that puts love for music first”.

Dom or Dominick McDuffie is an emerging multidisciplinary artist specializing in documentary photography & DJ. As a self-taught photographer, his photography is rooted in community, cultural preservation and authentically documenting Black spaces, as well as the people in and around them. As a DJ, Dom uses his creativity within event curation and promotion. Dominick is one of the members of Oasis and founder of Curfew. Both outfits emphasize providing safe, creative and inclusive dance parties.
