This next selection is one of my favorites. Coventry Carol (the dead baby Christmas song) is a haunting lullaby written to commemorate the slaughter of the innocents. This is a part of the Christmas story that is often overlooked in the celebration of the birth of Christ, but is an important event to show the state of the world that Jesus was born into. The slaughter of the innocents refers to a decree sent by King Herod demanding that all male children under the age of two be killed.
Coventry Carol is a lullaby from mothers to their children that will never wake because of this decree. Not only is the melody beautiful and melancholy, but the mixed meter (where this is a non-standard number of beats in some measures) add a feeling of imbalance and "wrongness" to the tune. This beautiful arrangement was created by Seb Skelly.
