A special treat from the Shirley Jones archives just for you!

Play the recording below and prepare to be amazed. Even at 16, Shirley Jones’ soprano could soar. This ultra-rare audio clip, the earliest known example of the future “Oklahoma!” star in concert, features Shirley as a surprise soloist at the Western District Chorus Festival in Canonsburg, Pa., on April 21,1950. Just a sophomore in high school, she melts hearts with Italian composer Luigi Arditi’s "Il Bacio (Sulle labbra).” The performance could have been lost to time, but Pittsburgh resident Homer H. Wagner taped the concert on his reel-to-reel deck when it was broadcast on WJPA Radio. He passed the tape on to his granddaughter, graphic designer/genealogist Diana Thornton, and it was digitized by Parker Dinkins.
