I paint what I hear in music so that others can also have a visual reminder of their favorite music.
This large painting currently hangs in my studio and holds a special place in my heart. Inspired by Philip Glass's "Opening," it represents a significant part of my creative journey. The painting is supported by a furniture-grade wood panel gifted to me by my aunt and uncle, both esteemed contemporary artists who greatly influenced my love for abstract art.
My aunt's incredible artwork, which was at a critical juncture in her career (getting shown with blue chip painters), came to a halt due to illness. This wood panel was hers; I am forever grateful for this gift. My uncle, a renowned sculptor, who introduced me to music at age six with a Chopin record, ignited my passion for classical music. This painting is a tribute to them, with a personal dedication on the back, which I hope will resonate with its future owners.
I would love for you to come and see it! I hope it finds a home that appreciates its history, stories, and meaning behind the art. ๐จ

This is one of my favorite paintings. It is currently resting at my studio having been at an art show Feb-March. I find that having a painting I like in the studio, keeps me constantly comparing my current works in progress to those finished ones. Are my new ones just as good or better? Are they honest to the goal of music translation? Are they accurate? Would I be proud to hang it at home? Does it feel like the music? Is the movement the same speed as the music? Is the chord structure reflected? Is the rhythm captured?
I create a few commissions each year for people who want to see their favorite piece of music come alive in their homes and offices. Let me create one for you! DM or contact me through website. Thank you!
These three 10"x10" paintings are part of a set of 6. They are Translations on Helen's Theme (music by Philip Glass). I am a music translator...I translate music into abstract paintings. Once I single out a piece of music, I can imagine an environment for the music to live in. Then, the music starts to appear in my head in relation to its themes, rhythm, tone, scales, etc. So, this is what I focus on, music translations.
I generally paint large paintings over 9 sq. ft., but here, I wanted to create several smaller paintings to play with while capturing the music. To see the rest of this series, visit my website. If you are interested in knowing more about having me paint a music translation of your choice (any genre), then give me a DM!
This painting is titled "Translation No. 1 of 'Opening'" I translated Philip's Glass's music by the same name into this abstract painting so that I could capture the same feeling I get from the music. It's almost as if the music, if it were physical, would live inside my head and then from my head, it goes onto the canvas. I am a painter, but I started life wanting to be a musician, and so I was trained classically on piano and flute. Art is my passion, and the reason I paint is music.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I do, and you can find more translations on my website. I am always open to a conversation if you are thinking about having a painting created that translates your favorite piece of music. Let's talk!
This artwork is titled Translation of Translation of Violin Concerto No. 1, I. Quarter Note = 104 - Quarter Note = 120 (Philip Glass). For a closer look I invite you to visit my website! This piece by Glass conjured itself in these colors, with these patterns, and the physicality of scraping flat and metallic paint across the canvas. I hope it moves you the way it does me.
For me, painting music is all about tapping into the raw emotions it stirs within us. Each piece I create is like a mirror reflecting the soul-stirring impact of music on our very being. It's my way of capturing the sheer beauty and depth of the music's journey, translating it into a visual language that speaks volumes about the human experience.
This 3'x3' painting is titled "Translation of 'Nils Has a New Piano'" I am deeply inspired my music's ability to change our moods, our desires, our state of mind, and in this case, Nils Frahm's music was the focus of my abstract translation. For bigger photos of this painting, please visit my website. Enjoy!
These three paintings are part of a series I called "Translation of Helen's Theme," which is a musical work by Philip Glass. He is one of my favorite composers, and I paint his music regularly as inspiration strikes. I translate music into paintings because I like to *see* a reminder of the way that piece of music makes me feel.
I take requests on music. If you need to have a piece of music serve as a VISUAL reminder of the way you want to feel, then let's chat!

I am feeling low today because of all of the mundane tasks I am working on like submitting applications to residencies, applications for juried shows, rewriting Bio, CV, resizing and renaming image files for each application (argh), and more un-fun stuff. WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I got an email that someone bought a print of mine off of Saatchi Art. Well, that just lit me up! I just used my over-excited energy to upload another artwork to Saatchi so that I can share this little victory, haha. I've been bad about updating Saatchi, but I am back and uploading... stay tuned... 20 paintings coming up to the upload!

Translation of Nocturne Op. 33 - Homage to John Field Op. 33 (S. Barber) - Acrylic and Paper on Canvas An original, unique painting by Shany Porras, who translates music into abstract paintings. For this piece, I've pulled from Monet's almost abstract waterlily paintings to mimic what is in Samuel Barber's homage to John Field.
