Dyslexia is the most common learning difference. It is believed that 10-20% of the population has some form of dyslexia.

When we say dyslexia, we
🧠deepen our understanding
👄provide a name for struggles
💪🏼empower those with dyslexia

‼️Did you know that the United States Department of Education sent out a letter in 2015 to all schools clarifying that there is nothing in the IDEA that prohibits the use of the term dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia in an IDEA evaluation, eligibility determination, or IEP document?

For quite some time, there has been a shift in language within the community from the person first to identify first. This is a personal decision, but as we see the being highlighted and the movement for options to identify on platforms like LinkedIn, awareness of this shift in language for neurodiverse thinkers is essential.

So, let's say dyslexia. Let's educate ourselves so that we can better serve and honor our students. 🦋

plays a significant role in various aspects of literacy, impacting both reading and writing abilities. Here are 5 key areas where morphology influences literacy:

1. Word Recognition: Morphological knowledge helps in recognizing and decoding unfamiliar words. By understanding morphemes and their meanings, readers can break down complex words into smaller meaningful units, facilitating word recognition. For example, knowing that "un-" is a prefix indicating negation can help readers understand the meaning of words like "unhappy" or "unusual."

2. Vocabulary Development: Morphology contributes to vocabulary growth by allowing readers to understand the meanings of new words based on their morphemic structure. When readers encounter an unfamiliar word, they can use their morphological knowledge to infer the meaning of the word by analyzing its morphemes. For instance, if readers know the meaning of the root "bio-" (related to life) and the suffix "-logy" (study of), they can deduce the meaning of "biology" without prior exposure to the word.

3. Spelling: Understanding morphology aids spelling accuracy. When writers know the morphological patterns and rules of a language, they can apply this knowledge to spell words correctly. For example, knowing that the suffix "-ly" is used to form adverbs can help writers accurately spell words like "quickly" or "happily."

4. Word Meaning and Semantics: Morphological knowledge enhances comprehension by providing insights into the meanings of words. By identifying and understanding the morphemes in a word, readers can infer its meaning and make connections with related words. This ability to analyze and interpret morphological structure contributes to a deeper understanding of word semantics.

5. Word Formation and Productivity: Morphology influences word formation and creativity in writing. Writers can use morphological processes to create new words, modify existing ones, or employ wordplay for rhetorical effect. Understanding how affixes, roots, and other morphological elements combine allows writers to expand their vocabulary and express themselves more effectively.

Overall, morphology plays a crucial role in literacy, impacting word recognition, vocabulary development, spelling, word meaning, and word formation. By understanding the structure and function of morphemes, individuals can enhance their reading and writing skills and develop a more profound grasp of language.

Let’s discuss the first layer of language development as outlined by Hi Peak Literacy on yesterday; PHONOLOGY and it’s relation to literacy.

Dyslexia is a disorder that affects the processing of phonological information, resulting in a specific difficulty with reading. This condition is caused by a neurological developmental language disorder.

Phonology focuses on the sounds of our language. Importantly, processing of phonological information is the foundation of literacy development.
