This video went viral on TT so I assume people want to know more about WHY the Drake Passage is so trecherous, so lemme get out my science degree šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ”¬ First is the scientific reason why the waves get so dang high and rough: the Drake Passage is an area where two seas converge away from any land masses, so theyā€™re just slamming into eachother making these giant swells usually. Waves can get up to 40 feet high, BUT, thereā€™s a rare chance of getting the Drake Lake where thereā€™s no waves at all, which I have gotten 1 out of 6 times šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« The Drake Passage is not dangerous because the ship might sink. The ships were built to handle it. Itā€™s dangerous because everyone is constantly stumbling up, down, and side to side, along with cabin furniture and unsecured items. We had a couple people fall out of chairs, off a toilet, and I definitely got hit by my chair when I was sleeping! Most people fear it because they donā€™t want to get seasick, but trust me, I get seasick and I just take the preventative meds and am fine! Itā€™s worth it to see antarctica!! Also yes I have heard about the ā€œrogue waveā€, but Iā€™d like to urge people to wait until more info and research comes out. Iā€™ve never heard of such a think and people are throwing the term around like itā€™s a solid answer and thing, but keep in mind there were more than one unfortunate incidents on that trip/ship. (To me it seems like the ship was old and easily damaged since a zodiac also exploded). Again my deepest regrets to all passengers on that voyage.
