DO YOUR HOMEWORK, OR ASK SOMEONE WHO REALLY UNDERSTANDS THE SCIENCE, AND HAS THOUSANDS OF ANECDOTAL STORIES THAT SPELL SUCCESS!

May I suggest that you do some research on how to lose body fat, while successfully building or maintaining lean muscle mass?

First of all, I’m in the midst of 44 years of full time personal training, during which time I’ve not only taught thousands of people how to exercise and how to eat correctly, but how to do it in a way that will fit their schedule as well as their current eating habits.
Secondly, I practice what I teach, meaning, because I’ve gathered the most efficacious methods for reaching personal goals, and I’ve used them, personally! I’ve worked with clients, who have never exercised, unless they were forced to do it in gym classes, during their school years, and I’ve worked with competitive athletes, both amateur and professional.
Just in the last couple years, I trained a young lady as well as designed her nutrition program to prepare her for the physical fitness test at the US Secret Service Academy. She set the second best times on record for a female secret service agent!

Here’s the point to all of this: you can’t achieve your fitness goals with a pill, fad diet, or new exercise program that you stream on the internet or watch on video. Proven knowledge and common sense trump all of the above methods. For instance, you can’t achieve your goals by applying a diet that utilizes a 1000 calorie a day deficit, when your BMR(basal metabolic rate) plus activity level dictates a greater calorie intake, which needs to be adjusted as you become more fit. Recently, I have counseled several people, who were advised by other trainers to keep their calorie level at 900-1100 for long periods of time. Well, that method worked for the purpose of “losing weight”, but they also lost muscle mass and strength, as well as being tired all of the time and not recovering the way they should. For instance, if your BMR plus activity intensity and frequency of activity adds up to 2000 calories to keep you at the exact same body fat percentage and muscle mass at which you currently are, then a 300-500 calorie deficit per day must be utilized. Fat loss has to be slow, because God designed our bodies to survive extreme starvation and stay warm, because body fat breaks down more slowly than stored carbohydrates and muscle. At best one can lose .5-1.0 pounds of body fat in a week. Faster loss spells disaster and CAN NOT be sustained for long periods. Yes, our bodies are smarter than we are!

If your goal is to lose some body fat and get a more fit look, then 80% of what you’ll want to see in the mirror (with or without clothes) is predicated on how you fuel yourself consistently!

Because we all like true anecdotal evidence:

One of my best clients of all time, Charlotte, called me many years back, because she was totally frustrated and confused. She was doing serious bicycle riding(at least 100 miles per week), she was lifting weights, and she thought she was eating reasonably well, thinking the level of cardio would get her lean.

So, she tells me she can’t believe that she’s having to go up to a size 14 dress. Well, she started working out with me, and within 31/2 months she was down to a size 6.

The biggest reason for her dramatic change was her willingness to consistently eat correctly and eat more frequently each day.

Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying, because you can lift weights, do lots of cardio, eat poorly; and you’ll get stronger and have more endurance and be somewhat more healthy, but you will be forever frustrated with your appearance(with or without clothing).

How your clothes fit and how you look in the mirror are typically the biggest priority.

During my 43 years of full-time personal training, I’ve seen clients set goals to “lose weight”, but not be willing to focus on the most important component, eating, but rather try to just do more resistance training and cardio. They get stronger, and they look better, but they stay frustrated, especially when the scale, which has been an erroneous marker, doesn’t show the loss that they wanted, and they don’t look as good as they could look, in and out of clothing.

Here is Lisa, featured in this video, who has lost 50 pounds this year, but figured out that the scale wasn’t important, and actually stopped weighing more than once a month, when she had been caught in the web of weighing daily.
Because she was eating and hydrating properly, along with consistently lifting weights three times a week with my guidance, and doing cardio 4 times a week, she realized that fat loss can only happen slowly and that gaining muscle was occurring at the same time.
Lisa is one of my many rock stars, who realized that eating properly and exercising must become a lifestyle if one wants to look a certain way. Fifty extra pounds on a 5’4” female is a bunch. And, when you factor in gaining muscle at the same time, the net of that is greater than a loss of fifty pounds of fat.

The goal should not be a number on a scale, but it should be how we look in the mirror, and Lisa looks terrific!
