-The intention of this post is to be helpful should this happen to you . - I took these photos from one of the professional dental groups discussion board. It is said that they took this evidence from Amazon product review page. This is a make-it-at-home orthodontic retainer. It locked in patient’s mouth and he can not get it out. Human teeth have undercuts and soft material when it hardens can easily lock in undercuts and dental embrasures (natural tooth anatomy). - As a human being I definitely understand the desire to save money and to find less expensive solutions. After all a retainer or a night guard can cost anywhere from $500 to $1000 depending on what it is used for. Therefore probably spending $50 on Amazon vs $500 at a dental office sound beyond reasonable to give it a try. - If this happens to you do not panic. Stay calm. It can be very stressful. The first thing you should do is to take hot water in your mouth and hold it (hot tea or coffee temperature, obviously you do not want to burn yourself, but coffee temperature is usually hot enough to soften the material). Keep repeating it and keep trying to gently lift it. It can take couple hours, but it should eventually work. - Your next bet (if you can’t get it off) is your dentist. If you do not have a good relationship with a dentist you may be out of luck trying to find someone to help you remove it. I am just being honest. If you have a good dental home your dentist maybe able to help you . They will likely bring you after working hours or on their lunch break as it can take hours to cut it off. You will probably be charged per hour of work whatever your dentist charges per hour. This is very tedious and difficult to do, because it’s easy to damage teeth and other mouth anatomy. -I wrote this post to help you should you get in a pickle. -The side note is this: you can easily damage your joints by doing it at home. I just took a three day course on how to adjust a dental appliance because occlusion is super complicated and you have to understand a million things about jaw movements. There are certain pressure points on the teeth that have to line up just right for your bite to be stable. This is why your dentist spends time when you tap-tap-tap when he adjusts your bite. I mean it’s complicated and I have been studying occlusion for 20 years and it’s still not enough. This is why your appliance costs $600 because pressure points on your teeth have to be placed in a certain position and it takes time and knowledge.
