Oh hey! I see you there, hunting for unique and handmade gifts! Surely, you got the memo to shop on Etsy, right? WRONG.

Imma take this time of year to repost an article I wrote a while back that endeavors to educate you about "handmade" and how deceptive online shops can be about slinging that word around.

It's great to shop small, but be very aware of where the "small shop" sources its goods from. If you're truly looking for artist-made pieces, get to know the artist you're interested in! Do they have process photos on their site? Do they show up at local fairs? Are they happy to answer questions about how they make their pieces? Is there an actual human you have met or seen make videos about their art? While some folks value their privacy online (yours truly included), you should still be able to find answers to questions like these in your pursuit for the real McCoy. :)

The BANE of my online shop existence is shipping. It's NOT intuitive, and shipping calculators don't really account for "a bunch of extra padding that makes this item an inch bigger and an ounce heavier". While I focus on pottery, I'm a maker at heart. I love to make all the things, especially zines and prints! Lone Star Zine Fest was an amazing event: so many people with independently produced books, comics, and art was overwhelmingly delightful.

I wholeheartedly hope to table at this event next year, and ABSOLUTELY recommend YOU attend if possible. It did not disappoint. 🧚📖

I'll be honest, my time at ArtsGoggle was miserable, largely due to the fact that vendors all around me felt the need to play MUSIC or WATCH TV at high volumes all day.

If you are in public, in close proximity to other people, I BEG you, make the choice to either wear headphones, or go without.

If I'm vending, I'm working. The festival is my vibe: the musicians, the people talking with me, amongst themselves. At ArtsGoggle, I instead had trouble focusing when someone was talking to me, and from 10am to 10pm (that's TWELVE HOURS) I had audio from at least four different sources, not including the festival music. I can't imagine how cacophonous it was for people attending.

Frankly, I find it in poor taste that some people felt the need to play their music all day, and others had the audacity to watch football games all day. Focus on your work! Focus on the people! Focus on the sounds of the world around you! Focus on the MOMENT!
