Being open about HS can be difficult. Communicating with your Dermatologist and others with HS can aid in guiding you to finding new ways to manage and treat your condition.
Are you familiar with Collagen and Collagen-based Wound Dressings?
Collagen is a natural protein produced from the body that encourages cellular stimulation for tissue growth and healing. Collagen Wound Dressings contain certain biomaterials that act similarly where they encourage both the formation of specific cells as well as the formation of naturally produced collagen. Special Collagen Wound Dressings containing silver and alginate are known to be significant prevention of biofilms that form in infected areas. They are also known to absorb up to 20 times their weight while continuing to both absorb and maintain optimal levels of moisture for wound healing.
Are there certain things that you eat that cause your HS symptoms to worsen? Eliminating some of the following foods out of your diet can help to lower levels of hormones in your body that trigger HS symptoms and inflammation.
Dairy Products- Cow's milk, cheese, cream cheese, yogurt, buttermilk, ice cream, cottage cheese and butter are all examples of dairy products that can trigger HS symptoms to flare up.
Sugary/Starchy Foods- sugar, fruit juices, corn syrup, bread, rice, pasta, high fructose corn syrup, noodles, sodas, white flour, potato chips are all high in carbohydrates and break down to sugar in your system, causing inflammation to occur and the possibility of a break out.
Brewer's Yeast- Beers, wine, some vinegars and salad dressings, and even some health supplements contain yeast that can cause a reaction in your immune system and enhancing the possibility of HS symptoms to occur.
Finding foods that are free of dairy, sugars/starches and yeast can be difficult for some.

Do you know that turmeric relieves inflammation and has antibacterial properties? It can also be applied topically or ingested. This can be used as a preventative for flare ups or applied directly to wounds to help relieve pain and swelling.
There are many different ways to use turmeric to prevent or treat wounds.
Some include:
>Taking turmeric capsules daily as a preventative.
>Applying directly to wounds with a carrier oil such as coconut oil. This will help inflammation subside and help to prevent the wounds from spreading or becoming infected.
>Making a turmeric infusion. You can easily make a turmeric infusion by boiling water, adding a tablespoon of turmeric powder, and drinking while it is still warm.

While there is no current cure for Hidradenitis Suppurativa, there are some natural treatment options to help alleviate pain and inflammation caused from flare ups.
Warm compresses with a heating pad can help reduce pain in the affected area. It is important to use a dry source of heat as keeping this area dry can help aid in faster healing.
Anti-Inflammatory and Antimicrobial properties are helpful to prevent infection from developing, and to bring down swelling. Turmeric mixed with a small amount of carrier oil, honey, or aloe vera applied to affected area(s) in 15 minute intervals can reduce inflammation. Just rinse off with cool water when finished!
It is always important to keep the area clean and dry! Antibacterial soaps are great to use to help prevent the spreading of flare ups. We have heard from some of our HS friends that the Gold Dial bar soap works great for them!
