If you are a merchant who keeps your generated revenue as a running balance in your Stripe, Etsy, Shopify, Square, and Shopify holding account, I would transfer it to your bank right away… like today.
With confidence, I can say that not many people in payments industry has the expertise I do when it comes to e-commerce transactions| payments.
With the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, I would be running away from Payfacs including Stripe, Square, and Shopify Payments. Here’s my take on it.
Etsy + Stripe + Shopify + Square + Silicon Valley Bank = The Death of Mega Payfacs? 💀 💀
I hope so.
Unless you understand the payment processing sector, the stories coming out from sellers who haven’t gotten paid from Etsy will seem like people simply complaining about a weekend funding delay. However it’s much bigger then that.
Etsy is a Payfac and has a master merchant account. Their sellers can sign up for Etsy Payments and accept payments for their products they sell on Etsy.
Sellers get paid weekly.
Etsy used SVB to facilitate disbursement to some sellers. Now all funds are frozen.
Here is where things unravel.
Many sellers have already shipped the products to people. They have purchased the supplies. They have already bought inventory and they have already paid their overhead and bills because they knew that at the end of the week, they will get paid the balance sitting in their Etsy dashboard. Now what do they do? The ripple effect begins.
Stripe - The tech community and PE groups guzzle the Stripe koolaid so they naturally put their funds wherever Stripe told them to… guess where .. at the country club bank for the next great unicorn.
Stripe’s Atlas program partners with SVB through the Atlas program. Entrepreneurs gain access to:
1. U.S. bank account from Silicon Valley Bank
2. An account to receive payments from anywhere in the world.
Do you want to talk about a tsunami that’s about to hit businesses who work with Stripe IF these companies followed the herd and kept all of their money in SVB.
If companies used Stripe for their payment processing and went with SVB for their bank, all payments processed (sales each company makes) were deposited in their SVB bank accounts AND they didn’t send those funds off to other banks(few companies spread out their risk when they process with Stripe with alternative merchant account solutions) ,their money is frozen. This means they have no funds to pay their employees, fulfill their products and services, or pay for basic operational costs.
Shopify - good ol’ Shopify Payments. They continually bully merchants into using their master merchant account to process payments. Those who rebel pay a 1% surcharge as a penalty if a merchant wants to use their own merchant account. Then they turn around and terminate many of the industries they approve but deem high risk. Shopify Payments processes merchant’s transactions under a master merchant account they hold. Then they pay out the business on a daily basis. However, many many many business owners just keep the funds in Shopify( keep a running balance) like many businesses do with PayPal & Stripe.

Etsy delays payments to sellers due to Silicon Valley Bank collapse The tech platform said that only 0.5% of its active sellers experienced delayed payments due to the shutdown and that it has begun resolving the issues using a different processor.
