On the Loss of a Treasured Member of the Dojo Family
Cynthia Harnist has been the manager at University Karate Center since Sensei Mason began teaching in Plantation over 40 years ago. Mr. Mason met Cynthia in Boston in 1971 and they were married in 1972. Last Friday morning, Cynthia suffered a severe stroke and went into a coma. She passed away on Saturday evening. Everyone at the Dojo will miss her dearly. You are welcome to leave messages of condolence here or directly with Sensei Mason. He asks only for text messages and will not be accepting phone calls at this time.
The Dojo will be open for classes as usual. Keeping his focus on training is one way that Sensei will meet this challenge. It is what Cynthia would have wanted him to do. At the same time, some of Sensei’s usual classes may be taught by other instructors this week. All of us here at University Karate Center appreciate the steadfast support of our Sensei, students, and their families. Any updates will be shared here and schedule changes will be on the website.

New School Year-Energize your Child with MuDoKai Martial Arts
With the start of the new school year students are busy with their new courses, new classroom and new teachers. It is all very exciting. Then the homework starts. We have heard stories from our students who have been loaded up with hours of homework each night and thus, feel unable to take regular karate classes. The 2009 ruling of the Broward County School Board mandates no more than ten minutes of homework per grade year, starting with Grade One is allowed in the Public Schools. Using this formula a student in 6th grade would have no more than one hour of homework a night. This gives children the opportunity to train at the Dojo and pursue their other extra curricular activities without feeling oppressed by more of the “sit-down” studies that fill up their days from Monday to Friday. It also gives them an opportunity to be invigorated by exercise to increase the amount of oxygen in their blood and thus stimulate their brains while improving muscle tone, flexibility, stamina, agility and balance.
