The Healing Power of Proper Breathing How we inhale and exhale has profound effects on our health—and not just during a crisis like the pandemic.
Nasal Breathing anyone? https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1286457920300800?fbclid=IwAR1jNbyYrkfjPNS-4yaxiSOt9tnpOWZYVv4qcvScIN5xX-Rg8OCA0lnrzKQ
Could nasal nitric oxide help to mitigate the severity of COVID-19? The nasal cavity and turbinates play important physiological functions by filtering, warming and humidifying inhaled air. Paranasal sinuses continuall…
Your breath can be messy stove-top fire OR a fine tuned rocket engine.
Breathing is a SKILL that enables you calibrate your engine to the road ahead. Walk into a public gym and you will undoubtedly witness with some wildly inappropriate breathing.
Everything changes when you finally experience how perfectly your breath supports and energizes you mission.
Your nose is an amazing technology. Yet most people don’t utilize it very well and prefer to continue using a “square wheel.” After all, mouth breathing is familiar and round wheels seem risky... what if you roll backward😳?
When you experience the benefits nasal breathing and realize that your nose is the perfect regulator for aerobic training, healthy respiratory function and metabolism … it feels crazy that you weren’t willing to slow down long enough to recognize what you’ve been missing out on.
Thankfully, awareness is growing for the “round wheel” that is nasal breathing. You can do a quick web search and find a ton of features and scientific articles pointing toward the benefits but here are a few notable reasons it is worth exploring:
👃🏼The increased resistance of your nose (as a result of the smaller airway) helps activate the diaphragm and accelerates inspired air to reach the lower lobes of the lungs where there is significantly more surface area and blood for greater oxygen absorption.
👃🏼Nasal breathing encourages the retention of a healthy amount of CO2 which in turn makes oxygen more bioavailable in the body.
👃🏼Nitric Oxide produced in the nasal cavity is delivered to the lungs thereby increasing oxygen absorption in the aveoli.
👃🏼The nose acts as a filter and helps remove airborne pathogens and dust. The increase in Nitric Oxide also provides anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.
👃🏼Nasal breathing helps the body maintain hydration reducing the need to constantly drink water during a cardio workout.

walked in the woods with a group of us and pointed out that the forest we were walking in was contributing to the diversity and resilience of our bodies... as we breathed in airborne microorganisms that strengthened our gut environment.
In the current state of the world that sounds radical and terrifying to many. How could microorganisms in our environment be ok to breathe much less represent an asset to our health??
Let’s be careful. We don’t fully understand the variables of this situation. Let’s make sure our reaction does not create a fearful program within us.
At the conclusion of our group walk down a country road through the forest , I vividly remember thanking Dr. Zach Bush and receiving one of the deepest, most present hugs imaginable. Beyond polite, rather an extended embrace. It was long enough that my mind had multiple opportunities to wonder when it would end, social norms and barriers fell, then l become present to receive the genuine care of a fellow human.
Looking back on that now, it sounds like an event from a different planet. It is my hope we move through the current state and not become carriers of a program within us that makes this type of interaction distant and impossible. Instead I intend to anchor my memory and understanding that breath, environment, and fellow humanity are a synergy worth fighting for.
Let’s be real, you probably don’t inhale through your mouth when in a public restroom.
1st - the environment reminds you to shut your mouth, and breathe only as much as you need to.
2nd - doing your business probably requires that you activate your core.
Your next workout would probably benefit from both these ideas. Breath through your nose, engage your core.
YOU ARE THE GROUNDSKEEPER. Everyday is game day. The question is are you maintaining a healthy cardiovascular environment?
The wall of your blood vessels is called the endothelium. This is a single cell layer that separates your blood from the muscles, organs, and tissues inside you.
Your breath changes your blood chemistry, influencing the availability of oxygen and nutrients to your body and brain.
SHOW SOME RESPECT ... make it a point to move and play today!
Your cardiovascular system consists of 60,000 miles of veins, arteries, and capillaries that act as a nutrient delivery and detoxification system to keep your body happy and humming.
Your lungs are an interface between your body and its environment. This delicate surface area is almost the size of half a tennis court and exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide as the foundation of metabolism.
Breathing is NOT one dimensional. To be useful, a breath practice must be applied to real-world terrain.
For some, this may be the ups and downs of a stressful day, for others it may literally include the peaks and valleys of the local hills. Whether your stress is business, family, exercise or all three. Your breath is a dynamic regulator of your energy systems.
Maximizing success in any realm requires managing your energy. Your breath is your power. Learn to shift:
1. Know the terrain and put challenges in perspective. From the ground level it is easy to sprint up one hill not realizing there are five more on the road ahead. Zoom out, understand the terrain.
2. Be proactive and practice. The skills required to climb and descend appropriately are not born traits. Learn to up-regulate and down-regulate your energy by managing your breath. Shifting the gears will allow you to fight when necessary and regenerate when the conditions allow.
Optimizing progress requires awareness and adaptability. A conversation I had with cemented this into my process.
Bill Knowles is a reconditioning specialist (for athletes like Tiger Woods and Andy Murray) who brilliantly communicated to me how a reliance on protocols quickly becomes a crutch. In his world of rehabilitation, protocols literally take the form of braces and crutches. Knowles trades rigid protocols for dynamic low impact environments which require the participant to own the variables, like pool training.
Unfortunately, many people fail to seek the minimum effective dose from rigid protocols and instead adopt crutches as formulas in their pursuit of personal success.
What if instead of bringing a protocol mindset to our training we tune into our bodies and breathe through the dynamic environments of hypoxic (-O2) and hyperoxic (+O2) intervals with a readiness to FEEL our response and FIND our edges?
To achieve optimal progress YOU must own the the variables. This is why I avoid becoming a person’s “personal trainer,” instead I much prefer to engage as coach. A sign post and mirror to help anchor the awareness needed to make dynamic progress.

Hyperventilation is NOT uncommon.
10% of people chronically hyperventilate.
If you are chronically hyperventilating you are permanently under-supplying your brain with O2. This causes the brain to under-perform which may lead to adverse long term health effects.
Episode 1 features a short but steep climb that put through all 5 breath gears.
Thanks to innovators:
Altitude effort with a dash of oxygen is the perfect sprint cocktail to boost brain energy and muscle recovery.
Pause and know that the greatest power within you is hope. Your essence is anchored outside the noise and confusion of fear. Extend your exhale through pursed lips and return to essence.
Now is a perfect time to start a breath practice. Your breath is your first responder.
4 rounds of this simple pattern is a gateway toward a more grounded state of being, calmer nerves, and better sleep.
It takes less that 1.5 minutes to complete:
🌞Inhale 4 second - Inspire w/intention
🤲🏼Hold 7 second - Hold w/presence
🌬Exhale 8 second -Release w/gratitude
Try doing this 2x a day and tag someone who would appreciate this reminder. Breath well, be well🙏🏽

Training outside in this “Beijing” haze? No thanks. Especially not when a 15min session can earn 2.5hrs of cardio-respiratory benefits!
It's not just fog turning the sky gray: SF air quality is 3 times worse than Beijing The gray haze over San Francisco isn't just summer fog - it's also smoke from a series of wildfires burning on the West Coast, and it's pushed air quality into unhealthy levels.
Post-workout O2 sessions are great for athletes looking to flush lactic acid and mitigate soreness. 15min on the bike - a few intervals at altitude 🏔—> followed super oxygen💨 recovery stimulates and accelerates the rebuilding process💪🏼
