Juneteenth is a shortened version of “June Nineteenth,” and recently became the newest federal holiday in the USA. It celebrates the end of slavery in America. Juneteenth was initially observed on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas. There, enslaved African Americans were told the Civil War was finished and they were free.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued on Jan. 1, 1863, had already freed enslaved African Americans in the Southern states. But sadly, that news arrived nearly two years later in Galveston, located on the western edges of the Confederacy.

Acknowledging Juneteenth as a nation gives space for the African American community—and all of us—to remember and reflect on the journey from those years of horrific enslavement to the present day.

The effects of the evils of slavery continue today and require the healing that only the gospel of Jesus can provide. God cares for the oppressed, the hurting and the abused. God’s compassion and His action to deliver and restore people physically and spiritually are taught throughout His Word, in both the Old and New Testaments.

But it’s through His Son, Jesus, that God gave the world an eternal emancipator. Jesus is the Savior whose life, death, burial and resurrection ushered in the new covenant that provides spiritual emancipation from the bo***ge of sin and the fear of death for those who trust in Christ.

As we remember the horror of slavery leading up to Juneteenth, and the progress that has yet to be made in our nation’s healing, may Christ become an even more trustworthy hope for a world in need of the ultimate freedom and reconciliation only He can provide.

One of our most valued gifts as humans is freedom. But as Americans, it’s also easy to take freedom for granted. Most of us have never lived or even visited nations or regimes where many of the freedoms we regularly enjoy in the USA are denied.

Today of all days, it’s imperative to remember that the freedoms we enjoy in America came with a price—sacrifice. They were worth fighting for in the past, and are still worth fighting for today. Many brave Americans —men & women — were willing to face grueling opposition in order for us to enjoy the privilege of freedom.

We want to take time this Memorial Day to remember, reflect, and respond in deep gratitude for the many who were willing to pay a great price for our freedom.

This service of love and sacrifice on behalf of others points us to the greatest love and sacrifice of all, demonstrated by our crucified and risen Savior, Christ Jesus.
He was willing to pay the ultimate price, so that we can live forever in freedom from the bo***ge of sin and oppression. What a reason to celebrate!

“…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John:8:32

Today we remember fallen military heroes, those who laid down their lives and made such a great sacrifice.

God has blessed America with much freedom and may we never take it for granted, as this freedom came with a price. As we thank God on this Memorial Day for those who fought & perished for our freedom, we praise Him also for the price that Jesus paid for our ultimate freedom & redemption!
