"Postpartum depression and anxiety do not discriminate. Symptoms impede the functioning of devoted stay-at-home moms and Harvard-educated attorneys. Intrusive thoughts can puncture the most perfect plan. When this occurs, rational thought seems to evaporate. Any previous accomplishment or personal triumph takes a back seat to the all-consuming and interminable anxiety. Soon, that is all that is felt. Women describe this by proclaiming โthis isnโt meโ or โI just donโt feel like myselfโ or โIโm usually so easy-going, I donโt know who I am now.โ
As thoughts and feelings alternate between despair and rapid-fire obsessiveness, women with PPD begin to lose focus, along with the ability to successfully advocate for themselves."

Empowerment in the Face of Despair โI know what Iโm โsupposed to doโ to feel better. Everyone keeps telling me the same thing. I should exercise. I should sleep more. I should eat well. I should take the medicine. I know, I know, I KNOW. But something inside my head keeps telling me to push through this. I can get better. I d...

"Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts is written by Karen Kleiman, founder of The Postpartum Stress Center, which offers treatment for prenatal and postpartum depression and anxiety. In this book, she offers moms validation and guidance to navigate intrusive thoughts. She also encourages parents to speak up when theyโre feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or anxiousโbecause no one should have to go through this alone."

"Postpartum women continue to get very sick and remain reticent to ask for help. Women are struggling to get through the day while they, somewhat amazingly, manage to lovingly care for their infants who depend on them. Although coping skills can kick in when survival is threatened, that requires energy and reinforcement to be sustained. When women are let down by lack of an appropriate medical or societal response, too misinformed or too preoccupied to take notice, they settle into their fatigue and absorb the incongruity by way of their fragile self-esteem. "Karen Kleiman, founder of The Postpartum Stress Centre, refers to the โconstellation of lossesโ wrought by the transition to motherhood. She goes on to catalogue โsleep, finances, alone time, her former self, couple time, self-identity, body image, adult conversation, predictability, calmness, spontaneity, freedom, friends, her previous body, career, leisure time, privacy, intimacy, sexuality, confidence, self-esteem, to name a fewโ. Reading this list sounds catastrophic. In no other area of life would we expect someone to shoulder these losses alone, let alone embrace change of such magnitude without ambivalence. Yet, by expecting mothers to return to work with no supporting โvillageโ, no awareness of matrescence, and nowhere to take their distress, this is exactly what we do."
Matrescence matters: helping clients navigate the motherhood transition Open article: Therapeutic coach Ali Pember explains why understanding matrescence (the transition to motherhood) is vital if we are to truly support mothers through coaching. Coaching Today, July 2024

Having a baby can bring so many wonderful feelings and opportunities and is often met with joyous words of good wishes.
Having a baby can also mean putting many parts of ourselves, our desires and our relationships on pause and this doesn't always feel so good.
