What is Osteoarthritis?
Commonly referred to as a wear and tear disease, Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in your joint that cushions the ends of the bones gradually wears down.

Cartilage aids in frictionless joint motion. When the cartilage wears down completely, the joints are left vulnerable to wear and tear. When this happens, it causes your bones to rub together, resulting in pain, joint stiffness, and swelling.

Injecting the affected area with hyaluronic acid aids in protecting, cushioning, and lubricating the joints. This type of injection may be effective to reduce pain and improve function for up to 6 months!

What is PRP Therapy and is it right for me?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrated source of healing factors.

PRP therapy is a new cutting-edge therapy used to heal and regenerate soft tissues, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. With PRP treatments, the patient's own blood is drawn and processed to extract platelet-rich plasma. The PRP is then injected back into the affected area to enhance the natural healing process and reduce pain and inflammation.

If you have a tendon, ligament, or joint problem and traditional methods have not provided relief, then PRP therapy might be a good alternative option for you. The procedure is less aggressive than surgery and will heal tissue with minimal or no scaring and alleviate further degeneration of the tissue.

Inflammation: It is something that is viewed by many as a nuisance but it is a sign that your body is "under construction". What happens leading to inflammation is a chain of events that starts off with noxious stimuli such as heat, a nail or whatever form caused the injury. The blood vessels become damaged along with it tiny nerve endings get stretched triggering a histamines to be released. This release increases the plasma levels to the area filling it with vital white blood cells. As inflammation is a response to danger it can alter sensors leading to sensitization. NSAIDS, rest, ice, compression, mobilization and elevation are among the common treatments for most inflammations.

Pain is the brain making a decision to feel it. But what is happening in our body that leads to that? It's called nociception. Nociceptors are the nerves that sense noxious stimuli (characterised by mechanical, thermal and chemical pressures). The process involves sending messages through the nerves about the state of the tissue.
Initially when noxious stimuli occurs, the surrounding prostaglandins relay the information to sensor neurons that then travels to the inter-neuron in the spinal canal. This passes the signal to the projection neuron that travels directly to the sensory cortex (area highlighted in blue) that informs the brain of where in the body that the signal is coming from.

This can happen for a variety of reasons, including aging, injury, or repetitive stress. When the discs degenerate, they lose their ability to cushion and absorb shock. Somatic vs. Visceral Pain

"Pain" is further divided into two categories: Somatic pain & Visceral pain.
Somatic pain originates from the body's tissues, including the skin, bones, and muscles. This type of pain is usually sharp and well-defined, making it relatively easy to locate its source.
Visceral pain, on the other hand, arises from the body's organs. Because these organs are surrounded by layers of muscle and other tissue, visceral pain is often more diffuse and less well-defined. As a result, it can be more difficult to pinpoint its source.
Both types of pain can be managed effectively with a variety of treatment options. However, because visceral pain is more difficult to diagnose, it is important to consult with a pain management specialist if you are experiencing this type of pain!

Additionally, TENS units can be used on their own or in conjunction with other pain management treatments.
