On Saturday, June 29, 2024 one delegate and two life members represented PLFD at the New Jersey Exempt Firemen’s Association Convention held at Roxbury High School in Succasunna, NJ. Topics discussed included laws and benefits affecting Exempt Firefighters in our State. NEW restrictive impending regulations promulgated by OSHA could put many volunteer fire departments out of service and escalate costs to municipalities for a paid fire service. Pay close attention to the proposed regulations and Google “National Volunteer Fire Council” for the list of proposed regulations. An Exempt Firefighter is anyone serving 7 years of satisfactory service.
A ceremony for the recipients of awards for their actions at the January 14, 2023 house fire and explosion will be held Wednesday evening, February 28th at 6:30 PM sharp at the Carnevale Center, 10 Lenox Avenue, Pompton Lakes. The ceremony will begin with the swearing in of our 2024 officers by Mayor Serra followed by the presentations. Twenty-six firefighters and eight First Aid Squad members will be recognized at the ceremony. Family, friends and the public are invited to attend.
So, as we enter the Fall season, now is the time to begin to think about fire safety as it affects our homes. Our Fire Department answers many alarms that can be avoided by simple maintenance like changing smoke and CO alarm batteries in your home or business. The nationwide campaign has always been “change your clocks, change your batteries”. What we have been finding often when we respond is that most of the detectors are more than 10 years old. Herein lies the problem. When you change you batteries on the upcoming time change, please check the detector itself for the production date. If it’s older than 10 years old, it is recommended by the National Fire Protection Association that you replace it. Same for CO detectors. There are many new products that are now sold with “10 year batteries”thus eliminating the yearly ritual. Check them out. Replace yours if necessary. New batteries in an old or non-functioning detector are useless. Protect your family! It’s a small price to pay.

Lithium-ion batteries power smartphones, laptops, portable speakers, e-bikes and many other devices. While safe to use, they can pose risks when exposed to high temperatures or handled improperly. Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch on fire, and even explode when they are damaged or when they are improperly used, charged, or stored. Lithium-ion battery fires pose a high risk of serious injury or death. Please Google Lithium battery charging tips for more information.
Congratulations to the Class of 2023! May you have a terrific graduation ceremony and a safe and enjoyable summer. Enjoy your family, friends and graduation parties in a safe and responsible manner! Good luck to all of you as you pursue your future plans.
Gotta’ take care of the equipment so it takes care of you!
Eight area fire departments observed a demonstration this morning of “The Turtle”, a water distributing device for electric vehicle fires. The Turtle is shown under the car discharging 500 gallons of water per minute on the underside of the vehicle where the battery storage area is located in the floor pan. It can also be utilized for other types of fires and Haz-Mat incidents. Once deployed, it operates unmanned, reducing exposure to fire and harmful toxic gasses. It is low profile design in order to fit under an EV battery case and is able to be assembled and deployed with minimal manpower. Our department will be looking for ways to procure this specialty firefighting tool.

At summer recreation camp yesterday PLVFD teamed up with Nurse KJ from Morristown Medical Center to give each age group a short talk on water safety. There have been over 40 drownings so far this year in New Jersey. Nurse KJ spoke about the importance of children wearing a life jacket when around or in water. She demonstrated the proper donning of the jacket on the campers as well as throwable devices, and most importantly the summoning of any nearby adult for help including calling 9-1-1. The importance of always swimming near parents or lifeguards was reinforced by her as well.
Al Evangelista, Captain of the fire department rescue squad, spoke about good boating practices like never standing up in a small boat and staying away from propellers even when the motor is off or in neutral. Parents, please reinforce these practices at home and when boating or swimming and let’s have an accident free summer season!
PLVFD conducted a boat drill on Pompton Lake last evening. Our Connector rescue boat, Zodiac, and Wave Runner were inspected and exercised with various operators and handlers practicing their skills. A review of safety procedures prior to and during deployment was conducted. The final hour of drill was dedicated to drafting water from the lake with a fire pumper to establish or supplement water supply when needed. A summary of lessons learned and reinforced concluded the evening.
Please be careful out there!

From all of us at PLFD to all of you - HAVE A SAFE AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR! Please be mindful of unsafe conditions that may exist in your home, like overloaded extension cords and carbon monoxide issues. Keep those CO and smoke alarms working to keep you safe. While we love to see you around town, we hope we don't see you for an alarm. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Merry Christmas from our (fire) house to yours!
Santa's new ride. See below
As Santa gets older it is becoming harder for him and Mrs. Claus to climb aboard the fire trucks for his ride around town. Hearing that, West Milford Firefighter Anthony Molnar with his fiancée Rachel and father FF Ken Molnar, a longtime friend of PLFD, constructed and donated a sled to our department for the Santa Run! What a nice gift for Christmas! 🥗
The sled will debut next Sunday, December 19th at 10 AM as Santa begins his trek around town. 🚒The route map will be posted tomorrow. Be on the lookout, listen for the music and sirens, and wave to Santa in his new 🛷decorated sleigh!! 🌲A very big thank you to Ken, Anthony and Rachel from PLFD!
L to R: Rachel, FF Ken Molnar, Department President Al Evangelista, FF Anthony Molnar and PLFD Firefighters Caden Halat and John Futcher.
