Did you know...

Pelicans don’t store fish in their pouch which is a common misconception, they do however use it to catch fish. Immediately after draining the water from their pouch, they swallow their catch. A pelican can eat up to four pounds of fish per day and its pouch can hold 2-3 times more water than their stomachs can 😳

Have you visited Disappearing Island in Ponce Inlet?

This island appears and disappears as the tides change. It's located where Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna meet. At 3/4 mile, this sandy spot is a recreational boating paradise. The best part, you can see Florida’s Tallest Lighthouse, the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse (where we're located), from the sandbar. It can act as your guide back to us at the end of the day :)

FAQ Time: "Do I need a valid boaters license in order to rent a boat from you?"

Answer: Anyone born after 197 needs to have a Florida Boaters LIcense. This can be completed online and it lasts forever. Anyone born before 1988 is fine as long as they have a driver's license. However, boating experience is required either way.

So.... to test your knowledge, what do you do when you see this sign??

If you happen to notice what looks like a pile of shells peaking out of the water, that's an oyster bed. They can cause damage to boats and people. 😰

Another member of our area's wildlife is the seagull. You probably notice them most when you're enjoying a meal out on a deck, on the beach, or on a boat.... pretty much anywhere coastal that you might eat outdoors. Our recommendation? Don't share, they quickly tell their colony to join in on the snackin'. Have you ever fed one?

Have you noticed any barnacles while out on the water??

A barnacle is a type of arthropod constituting the infraclass Cirripedia in the subphylum Crustacea, which means it is related to crabs and lobsters. Barnacles are exclusively marine, and tend to live in shallow and tidal waters, typically in erosive settings..... or attached to docks & boats.

The geological history of barnacles can be traced back to animals such as Priscansermarinus from the Middle Cambrian (on the order of 510 to 500 million years ago), although they do not become common as skeletal remains in the fossil record until the Neogene (last 20 million years). In part, their poor skeletal preservation is due to their restriction to high-energy environments, which tend to be erosional – therefore it is more common for their shells to be ground up by wave action than for them to reach a depositional setting. Trace fossils of acrothoracican barnacle borings (Rogerella) are common in the fossil record from the Devonian to the recent.

With all sorts of wildlife around us, one species you will see often is the Brown Pelican. On a daily basis, you can see their flying and diving skills as they hunt and dive along the shores or while they're sunning on the docks, channel markers, and mangroves.

There are actually 8 species of pelicans, but the Brown Pelican lives primarily on coastal shores and is one of two species of pelicans that dramatically dive for their food.

Did you know that their vision enables them to spot fish from 70+ feet?? They have no fear of diving straight in from that height. While they are skilled in flying and diving, a plunge from that height can turn into a disaster in the event of sudden wind shear near the water surface.
