- The name “signet” comes from the Latin word for “sign.” The earliest signet rings were carved with the wearer’s name and functioned as their signature or seal when pressed into ink, wet clay, or wax.
- The oldest signet rings date back to 3,500 BCE in Mesopotamia. They were also worn by the Minoans, Egyptian pharaohs, and ancient Greeks and Romans. Slide 3 shows a signet ring with name of King Akhenaten. This heavy gold signet ring bears the throne name of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten (1351-1334 BC).
- Signet rings had legal authority; the signet rings of popes, royalty and nobility were often destroyed upon the wearer’s death, making antique signet rings rare and highly valuable.
- Women began wearing signet rings in the 1970s and 80s. Princess Diana often wore one on her left pinky and other female members of the British royal family do so as well.
