Hello Horizon families,

This is Principal Johnson with exciting news on the last week of the school year.

Just a reminder parents, this Monday, May 27th, is Memorial Day and a school holiday. There is no school Monday, May 27th.

Tuesday through Thursday, first grade students will be participating in a science project called Gem Mining. Yes parents, there is still more work and fun to be had at Horizon Elementary.

This Wednesday is NOT an early release day. This Friday, May 31st IS an Early Release Day for this week. Parents, be prepared for early dismissal at 1:30 pm this Friday, May 31st.

To our fifth-grade parents, we wish you well as you journey with your students on to middle school. This week is filled with fun events for them:

Tuesday, May 28th – Tacky Tourist Dress Up day

Wednesday, May 29th – Western Wednesday dress up; Progression ceremony practice

Thursday, May 30th – Progressions Ceremony at 8:30 and Dress to Impress

Friday, May 31st – class parties, yearbook signings, and Dairy Queen. Students will also participate in the 5th grade Clap Out beginning at 1:15 pm.

And finally, this Friday at 6:30 pm, out Horizon Harmony singers will sing the National Anthem at the Daytona Tortugas baseball game. Please come out and support our students and our local sports community.

Fifth Grade Dress Up Days!

Exciting news! Horizon Harmony Singers will be performing the National Anthem at the Daytona Tortugas Game on 5/31 promptly at 6:30pm! If any Horizon families would like to come support, they are able to purchase discounted tickets for $8 in the GA section online @ https://www.milb.com/daytona/tickets/single-game-tickets for the 5/31 game.

Hello Horizon families,

This is Dr. Johnson with important news for this week.

Thank you, thank you, thank you parents. Our students have worked so hard over the past couple weeks on their FAST PM3 assessments. As we analyze the results, we are noticing Horizon students have a lot to celebrate. We appreciate the letters of encouragement from parents to their students, every opportunity to encourage and build confidence is a benefit. Congratulations to our teachers and thank you for supporting them throughout the school year.

This Tuesday, we will also celebrate high school seniors with a senior clap out for graduates from Spruce Creek and Atlantic High Schools. Parents, if you have a senior student who will be graduating this school year, you are welcomed to have them clap out at Horizon Elementary. The event will take place this Tuesday, May 21st, at 1:00 pm.

This Wednesday is an early release Wednesday. Please be prepared for dismissal at 1:30 pm.

This Friday, May 25th @ 8:30 am, our kindergarteners will celebrate with a promotion ceremony. Information has been sent out to our kindergarten parents in preparation for the big event. Kindergarten parents, make sure you RSVP and bring your ID to enter campus.

This Friday is also Thunder Day, where the event is Crazy Hair Day. Students and teachers may come to school with their version of a Crazy Hair Day. Let’s enjoy one another as we continue to learn these last weeks of school; at Horizon, where Eagles SOAR!

Good evening Horizon families,
This is Dr. Johnson with information about this week.

State testing for grades Kindergarten, First, and Second begin this week. Most students will be testing on April 30th and May 2nd. Testing begins promptly at 8:10, therefore it is important that your student arrives on time. K-2 students also need headphones for their assessments, if you are unsure if your child has headphones, please reach out to their classroom teacher.

4th quarter midterm grades are due this Wednesday, May 1st. Parents, you will be able to see your child's midterm grades later this week via Parent Portal.

This Wednesday is an Early Release Wednesday. please be prepared for dismissal at 1:30 pm.

Volusia County Schools is engaged in an ongoing continuous improvement process, of which all stakeholders are a part. An invitation to participate in the online survey between the dates of April 8th – May 10th as one method of reaching all stakeholders. These survey results will enable our school leaders to measure stakeholder perceptions and help target improvement strategies focused on student achievement, as well as school and district effectiveness. Taking the survey will also provide a means for stakeholders to learn about what parents and students should be looking for in a high-quality school system. Your cooperation and support in completing the surveys will be greatly appreciated. Find those surveys on our school website, Facebook, and also on VCS website.

This Friday, Horizon Elementary will be hosting a FAST-Testing Pep Rally!!! We will be lifting up spirits and encouraging our intermediate students to do their best during this testing month of May. The Pep Rally will take place this Friday at 1:00 pm, with special performances. We encourage our parents to also participate in the “Letters of Encouragement” documents that will go home this week. If you are the parent of a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader, you are encouraged to write a letter of encouragement to get you child through during testing season.

Hello Horizon Families,

This is Dr. Johnson with important news about this week.

Last Friday, some of our students participated in the Port Orange Art Haus art show. Congrats to the students whose art was on display. Also, Friday was VCS Battle of the books. The students did a great job on Battle of the Books! In Round 1- our Eagles team earned 11 out of 12 correct responses. In Round 2- 10 out of 12 correct responses. Horizon Elementary tied for 11th place out of 32 schools represented.

We are so proud of both of them, representing what it means to be a Horizon Eagle.

If your student is in tutoring or a club, they will continue this week.

This Wednesday, April 24th is Early Release Day. Early Release dismissal this Wednesday is 1:30 pm. Parents please be prepared for dismissal Wednesday at 1:30 pm.

This is Dr. Johnson, with important news for this week.

This week, our clubs and tutoring will continue. Thank you for allowing your students to participate.

This Wednesday, April 17th, dismissal will be at 1:30 pm. Again, this Wednesday is early release Wednesday. Be prepared for dismissal at 1:30 pm. Wednesday Evening at 5:30, we invite future kindergarten parents to our annual Kindergarten Round Up. Come see what a typical kindergarten day looks and sounds like. Our amazing kindergarten team will fascinate and educate on what to expect in the new year. Contact the school for more information.

This Thursday, April 18th, Horizon Elementary is hosting our monthly SAC meeting in the media center. Monday is also SAC elections. Please take a moment to vote for the future of our School Advisory committee.

This Friday, April 19th, our 1st graders are going on a trip to the zoo. First grade parents, if you are chaperoning for your child’s class, please make sure you reach out to your child’s teacher for process and procedures.

The month of April is dedicated to Celebrating Autism Awareness. If we have parents who would like to share their experiences with ASD, please reach out to us. You may contact your child’s teacher and schedule time to visit a classroom to present your discoveries, enlighten students on ASD and what it is like for an ASD student, their family. The more we understand, the better we become.

Thank you to our faculty, staff, and students participating in clubs and tutoring. We can see a big impact on our campus everyday.
