Dear Morningside Family…

Like many of you, last night, I watched as news broke that former President Trump had been shot at a rally in Pennsylvania.

With the election season in full swing, conventions right around the corner, and tensions running high amongst the different political parties (and sadly amongst Christians too), I feel it necessary to share a couple thoughts about the unfortunate history that was made last night.

Sadly, assassinations, and assassination attempts are part of our history. Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy were all killed. Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan were injured in attempts, and as you saw last night, Donald Trump became the third President to be injured in an attempt to take his life. These assassinations and attempts are not one-sided, as both Republicans and Democrats have been targets through the years, and families have been broken and crushed by these devastating losses.

Many will say these attempts are due to politics, and boil down to Republican vs. Democrat and who is “right.” While it is true that politics play a role, the issue runs much deeper. Everyone, whether democrat, republican, libertarian, independent, or other, are created in the image of God according to Genesis 1:27, and those lives should be cherished and protected from conception until one’s final breath.

Our nation has not always taken the right path. Sadly, President Lincoln lost his life trying to correct the path of our nation and set us back on a right course, where all people are treated with dignity, respect, and freedom.

We are at a crossroad, and there is a battle for your soul and mine, for the soul of your children and mine, and for the soul of our nation. The cure for the ills of our nation is not a republican president, democrat president, independent president, or any other political figure. The cure for your heart and mine, the cure for the soul of your children and mine, and the cure for the soul of our nation is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ. Above Him there is NO OTHER, and the only way that solution can be applied to the wounds of our broken land is by the church (Christians) standing up, being bold in our faith, and shining the “light in the darkness” as we’ve been called to do by speaking the TRUTH in LOVE.

I’ll remind you…The Pharisees (the politicians of Jesus’ time) told Jesus to tell his disciples (Christians) to BE QUIET. Sound familiar in our world today? …and what did Jesus say?
Luke 19:40… “I tell you” he said, “if they remain silent, the rocks will cry out.”

I challenge you today…Let it not be said of Morningside Church that the rocks had to cry out because we remained silent. You have the “good news,” and there’s a world around you that needs to hear it.

I love each of you more than you’ll ever know, and I pray for you and your families daily that God will protect you, strengthen you, encourage you, and make you bold in your faith.

I want to leave you with this prayer from Psalm 33:4-22. Please listen closely, or read along on the screens…

For he spoke, and it came to be;� he commanded, and it stood firm.

The Lord foils the plans of the nations;� he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.

But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,� the purposes of his heart through all generations.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,� the people he chose for his inheritance.

From heaven the Lord looks down� and sees all mankind;
14
from his dwelling place he watches� all who live on earth—

he who forms the hearts of all,� who considers everything they do.

16 No king is saved by the size of his army;� no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17
A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;� despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18
But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,� on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
19
to deliver them from death� and keep them alive in famine.
20
We wait in hope for the Lord;� he is our help and our shield.
21
In him our hearts rejoice,� for we trust in his holy name.
22
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,� even as we put our hope in you.
