Wilderness Way Baskets
After I moved to North Georgia, I started weaving custom baskets. I've been in business since 2007 and I recently moved back to North Georgia!
Watch for class announcements! I teach basketry but my homemade, hand-crafted baskets are also for sale. I can make you a custom basket and I take PayPal. Message me for pricing.
Thanks, Jill! Braided God's eye.

Here are all of the baskets from the class I taught at Georgia Basketry Association’s Summer Weave on August 10. I reversed the design on Patti Weaver’s “Small Stained Glass Tote.” (Debbie modified the design yet again!) Earlier in August, I shared Patti’s original design.
Here's a really interesting pattern that was shared on Facebook Basket Weavers; it's by Pat Walden. Click on it!

I gave my sample basket from the class I taught at Georgia Basketry’s Summer Weave to my friend Johna. It looks like it’s in a gallery!
I have a friend who is essentially bedridden, and she can no longer weave. I went to visit her the other day and she showed me a basket that she had made but it was supposed to have overlays and she had not been able to do them. I took the basket and the dyed reed for the overlays and did them today. I used my reversal of Patti Hawkins’ Stained Glass Windows design. Cute, huh?
Bwahahaha!
This is just sad!
Especially grammar teachers!
For all the quilters, embroiderers and textile artists out there.
Thank you, Joanna!

I made this basket some time ago; it’s Mary Price’s “Farmhouse Chic.’ I stained it with Weaver’s Stain Driftwood because I was going for the kind of rustic/elegant look that this little jewelry box has. I’m not sure I did the right thing; what do you think?
These are my take on Patti Hawkins’ “Small Stained Glass Windows Tote.” Patti’s design and my reversal.

A number of you asked about making the rainsticks themselves (prior to decorative weaving). I have looked and looked for the email from the "fan" who figured it out without all the drama that was involved with mine. Here it is! Thanks again to Laura!
Hi Karen,
I held the rainstick workshop a couple of weeks ago at our basket weaving club and it went well.
I had 5 rainsticks prepped with pvc pipe & finishing nails drilled into the pvc pipe. I purchased a 10' pipe from Home Depot, then had it cut into 16" & 18" lengths.
To insert the nails, I first drew a downward spiral in pencil around the pipe, then penciled where I wanted the holes drilled, about every 3 or 4". I then drilled holes every 3" or 4" into the pvc pipe, then went back to the top of the pipe and drilled more holes parallel to the first row of holes. The drill size was small enough that the nails would go in, but not loose enough that they slide out.
All total, there were @50 nails in the pipe. The recommendation is 40 nails per 12" of rainstick. The nails were not flush with the pipe, so I went back and beveled each hole with a drill so the nail would be flush.
I also had cardboard tube mailers, they also worked well for making the rainstick. The nails were hammered into the cardboard, so no drilling was needed! Many people found the sound with the rice, beans, etc to be a softer sound than the pvc rainstick.
When the members in the class began to make the rainstick, they chose to put a rubber band at the bottom to hold the spokes tight, then started to weave. When they wove @ 4 inches, they slid the rubber band off, and pulled the weaving down to the end. From there, they wove up the stick.
I had purchased wooden Oui jar lids with a plastic washer from Amazon for the ends of the pvc sticks. The plastic washer slips off, so I trimmed the washer, the slipped it back on the lid and it fit perfectly on the ends. For many of our members, that was easiest way to finish the ends and it looks great! Other members who used the cardboard rainstick, ended up taking scrap pieces of leather for the ends. They made slits, then glued the leather to the stick.
Below is a link you can click on to see photos of some of the rainsticks.
Happy weaving!
Laura

Another “vase basket” I made recently. I traded it for some turkey feathers!
My friend Suzanne was interested in a rain stick. She came over and I got her started and she went home and finished it!
