to Sacramento City College alumna, Outstanding Hispanic Woman of the Year, former White House fellow and first female president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Margarita Colmenares!
Colmenares was the first Hispanic female engineer named a White House Fellow. And for good reason. The Sacramento City College graduate has worked as a political appointee with the United States Department of Education, among other federal agencies, to improve math and science education. And while working with Chevron, she headed a major environmental cleanup at the corporation’s plant in El Segundo. She is now the vice president of business development for Growing Energy Labs Inc., (GELI) a clean-tech start-up based in San Francisco.
While at Sacramento City College, Colmenares received a General Electric scholarship and several others. She completed her studies in civil engineering at Stanford University, where she was the only Latina in her class.
“I learned early on that the community colleges could be an important stepping stone to my dreams,” Colmenares wrote in Hispanic Engineer magazine. “I found a supportive learning environment, a concerned faculty, guidance for scholarships and mentors from both the University of California, Davis and California State University, Sacramento, and related work experience that convinced me that I could succeed in my chosen field.”

Students on Campuses,” brought together over 1,000 participants from 105 colleges. Subsequently, regional gatherings were held at the College of San Mateo, Fresno City College and Irvine Valley College to represent large regions of the state. The inspirational events produced transformative actionable plans to better serve, support and affirm LGBTQ+ students at individual community colleges.
“This community college system-wide initiative addresses a critical and widespread need within higher education, with a particular focus on supporting a vulnerable population. Notably, a significant number of colleges throughout the state-wide system joined forces, showcasing advocacy and drawing attention to the initiative despite their decentralization. Their goals were admirable, and they exceeded all of them.” — Circle of Excellence Award Judges, CASE
The summit was selected from more than 4,000 entries submitted by two-year, four-year, public, and private institutions worldwide, for a project that honors our organizational commitment to innovation, equity and student success. This achievement is a testament to the powerful partnership between the Chancellor’s Office and FoundationCCC, bolstered by the dedication and expertise of our extraordinary volunteer California Community Colleges LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee.

to Diablo Valley College alumnus and former California State University Chancellor, Timothy P. White!
Timothy P. White is well-versed in the benefits of California’s higher education system. After graduating from Pleasant Hill High School in Pleasant Hill, Calif., in 1966, White enrolled at nearby Diablo Valley College for two years before transferring to Cal State Fresno, where he received a bachelor’s degree in 1970. Two years later, he picked up a master’s degree at Cal State Hayward, then added a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 1977.
White served as the chancellor of the 23-campus California State University system, the largest four-year public higher education system in the country, until 2020.
He credits Diablo Valley College for much of his success.
“When I enrolled at Diablo Valley College and began my higher education voyage… I was frankly more of a swimmer and water polo player than a scholar,” White once said. “As the first person in my family to pursue a college degree, it was my experiences at DVC that gave me the opportunity to find my ‘sea legs’ academically. I graduated from a high school only 20 miles from that University of California campus in the Berkeley hills, but for me at that time, the notion that I would someday pursue a Ph.D. at Cal was so unfathomable that, well, it might as well have been 20,000 miles away.
“I learned a lot about myself and my academic abilities during my time at DVC,” he continued. “The courses I took helped prepare me for my undergraduate degree, and my involvement in intercollegiate athletics – swimming and water polo – built self-confidence and furthered my clear understanding of the power of teamwork and focusing on goals.”

to former Chabot College student and Oscar-winning actor, Tom Hanks!
The turning point in Tom Hanks's life came when he enrolled at Chabot College in Hayward, started studying theater and watched a performance of Eugene O'Neill's “The Iceman Cometh.” The title role played by Joe Spano, later of “Hill Street Blues” fame, blew Hanks away. He decided then he would become as good as Spano.
Hanks first role as a student at Chabot College was George in “Our Town.” His two years at Chabot left an indelible impression on him.
In a 2015 New York Times opinion piece, Hanks wrote: “Classes I took at Chabot have rippled through my professional pond. I produced the HBO mini-series “John Adams” with an outline format I learned from a pipe-smoking historian, James Coovelis, whose lectures were riveting. Mary Lou Fitzgerald’s Studies in Shakespeare taught me how the five-act structures of “Richard III,” “The Tempest” and “Othello” focused their themes.”
Hanks spent two years studying theater at Chabot College before enrolling at Cal State Sacramento, but later dropped out. Instead, he told USA Today, “I got an offer to go off and do the thing I was studying to do.”
That offer was to become an intern at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland. His internship stretched into a three-year experience that covered most aspects of theater production, including lighting, set design and stage management.
Hanks' career track is the stuff of showbiz legend. After two seasons on the television sitcom “Bosom Buddies,” the affable actor came to prominence with the 1984 romantic comedy “Splash.” In 1988, he was nominated for an Oscar for his role as an overgrown kid in the dramedy “Big,” but several flops soon followed. By the mid-1990s, however, Hanks had scored a slew of commercial and critical hits, earning two consecutive Oscars, first as a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in 1993's “Philadelphia” and then as a mentally challenged man in 1994's “Forrest Gump.” In 2002, at age 46, Hanks became the youngest actor to receive the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award.
