There really is no need to explain the IMPORTANCE of creating wellness that is accessible, safe, black-centered and community focused. Portland has demonstrated the need for wellness in the community but has missed the mark in ensuring that these spaces serve more diverse representation. There is an ample need for Black people to have space without feelings of hesitance, discrimination, exclusion, and/or questionability. The core of Drink Mamey’s mission is taking steps to change that.

If you didn’t already know, Drink Mamey was created to honor the legacy of the founder’s father, Lashawn McCarthy. Lashawn McCarthy died January 20th, 2018 due to a heart condition he didn’t know he had. Lashawn had been struggling with his health for about 2-3 years before he passed away and countless doctors and professionals throughout that time, continually dismissed his pain and discomfort as heartburn and fatigue. There are implicit racial bias and disparities in our health care system. Black people are not receiving the same quality of health care that our white counterparts receive, and unfortunately, Lashawn was victim to this.

As we all take time to celebrate and honor Black history, Black futures and Black communities this month...let’s make sure shopping black, supporting black initiatives and uplifting black voices goes well BEYOND once a year in February. Black People are Black people 365 days a year. Black people experience racial biases in more industries than we can even imagine. Black people are still fighting for basic rights everyday. So, It is imperative to show up. It’s a requirement to check your surroundings, your privilege, check your friends and family members.

Drink Mamey is in the business of creating Black spaces in wellness made for us, by us, online and in-person. Daily, we put our best efforts forward to make sure we make room for the community to find safety, comfort, and joy in a space that aims to help everyone step into their BEST self, from the inside out!

We want to be as transparent and honest as possible here. There really is no need to explain the IMPORTANCE of creating wellness that is accessible, safe, and community focused for those who have been pushed into unfamiliar neighborhoods without access to wellness spaces.
On the other side of that, Portland has demonstrated the need for wellness in the community but has missed the mark in ensuring that these spaces serve more diverse representation.
This is the core Drink Mamey’s mission and we are taking the steps to change that. There is an ample need for Black people to have space where we don't feel hesitant because of discrimination, exclusion, and/or questionability.

With that, it’s no secret that small businesses, especially right now, are struggling to survive. Many Black-owned small businesses are having trouble accessing government funding and WE have experienced this (very frustrating) problem firsthand. With transparency, so far, this process has mainly been SELF-FUNDED and it has been the most humbling experience. We fully understand that times are particularly harder than normal but we are asking those of you who CAN to SHOW UP & OUT for the community by helping us reach our goal!

Our crowdfunding has reached over 3K which we are SO grateful for but we need more support!

We are so very humbled and excited to announce that Drink Mamey is opening our FIRST store in Northeast Portland, where opened their very first location, on NE 16th and Killingsworth!! We are so excited and looking forward to continuing our mission to bring health and wellness options to the community for many years to come.
We couldn’t have made this happen without the tremendous amount of love and support we’ve been given by all of YOU in our first few months of launching Drink Mamey. This whole process has been nothing short of a dream come true for us and we are so excited to share this positive news with all of you!
With full transparency, Oregon’s current state of emergency made us very very reluctant to share such good news during such a tragic time, but we also think shining a bright light in a dark room would give us all a little excitement and hope for the weeks to come. Stay tuned! Drink Mamey is planning for a Halloween Weekend opening, and we have so many fun and creative things planned for you all to enjoy!
