In 2023, 78 cases of TB disease were reported in Oregon, corresponding to an incidence rate of 1.8 cases for every 100,000 Oregon residents. This rate is a 5.9% increase over 2022 and is part of a ten-year trend of essentially stable TB disease rates in the state. Oregon remains a medium-incidence state for TB disease and remains below the national case rate. People who were born in the Pacific Islands (Chuuk and Marshall Islands in particular) continue to be diagnosed with TB disease at a high rate in Oregon. In 2023, one case of multi-drug resistant TB was diagnosed in Oregon. Three children under the age of 14 were treated for TB disease and two adults were co-infected with TB and HIV, both of whom had a concurrent AIDS diagnosis.
Nationwide, the TB rate is on a notable upward trend. 2023 was the 3rd consecutive year of increase with a case count of 9,615 and a rate of 2.9 cases/100,000 population. This rate is a 15% increase over the 2022 rate of 2.5 cases/100,000 residents. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the TB incidence rate is up 25% nationwide. On March 24, 1882, Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB). 142 years later we observe this date annually as World TB Day, a day to reflect on the progress made in the fight to end TB, recognize those who've made that fight a priority and who work tirelessly in our communities to prevent the spread of disease and provide care to those affected, and finally to recommit to the fight for a future free from TB.
The OHA TB program would like to thank all our local partners for the time and energy they commit to Oregonians across the state, providing testing, resources and treatment day in and day out. The work does not go unnoticed! We are for the progress made in the fight against TB and invite all Oregonians to join us in the fight against TB in our state and beyond.

Although anyone can get TB, some people are at greater risk of TB than others. This is because some population groups have higher rates of TB disease in their communities, thus raising the risk of becoming infected with the bacteria.

People arriving in the United States as part of Uniting for Ukraine must be screened for TB disease.
All people two years of age or older will need to be screened for TB by getting an interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) test within 90 days after arrival to the United States. An IGRA is a blood test to tell if a person has been infected with TB germs. It does not tell whether the person has latent TB infection or has progressed to TB disease.
Your county health department is able to provide you with a TB blood test for free. For information on where to get tested, please email [email protected] or call 503-358-8516.
