Decades of stabbing away furiously for nothing. Nun-trained, world-humbled. More info on website.
Sitting here musing about music this week, I just realized that I'm playing gigs six nights in a row, tonight through Sunday. What a roller coaster it's gonna be! So here's the rundown, so you can come on out and catch one or two or three of these killer shows:
Tuesday 10/8: Billy Blues Bar and Grill with Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle, 8-10 PM
Wednesday 10/9: The Blue Diamond PDX with the Kivett Bednar Band – Jeff Langston and Dave Melyan, 7-10 PM
Thursday 10/10: The Blue Diamond PDX with The Fenix Rising Band, 8-11 PM
Friday 10/11: The Blue Diamond PDX with Lara Price & Lisa Mann Double Dynamite plus Jason JT Thomas and Dave Melyan, 8-11 PM
Saturday 10/12: American Legion Santiam Post 51 in Lebanon Oregon with Lara Price & Lisa Mann plus Jason JT Thomas and Dave Melyan, 6:30 PM - ?
Sunday 10/13: The Slippery Pig in Poulsbo, WA with Lara Price & Lisa Mann plus Jason JT Thomas and Dave Melyan, 7:00 PM - ?
Okay, and then on Monday I'm SLEEPING.
My friends Dave Melyan, Jeff Langston, and bandleader Michael Osborn playing with the incomparable Chris Cain at the Rogue Blues Society Oktoberfest event earlier today. This was taken about 10 minutes before Michael invited Ben Rice and me to join them onstage. What a day – Ben and the band nailed our set, and then this thrill ride!
Looking out at the morning sky in Metz and reflecting on an absolutely unforgettable night with Lisa Mann at the Mecleuves, terre de blues Festival. I wish I had more photos to share, but I guess I was mostly living in the moment, enjoying the ridiculously sumptuous food and cramming on this one Randy Newman song that blew the crowd away.
Notes:
- Unending thanks to Lisa for bringing me along for this ride, and to Jason JT Thomas and Dave Melyan for being such outstanding musicians and stalwart road companions.
- Kudos to Harmo Nico for joining us onstage (last photo) and somehow amping up the energy level past what I thought was its acme.
- Yes, that’s a Nord. Don’t start with me.
In beautiful Alpine, Arizona yesterday…not only did I get to play a rockin’ set with Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle, but I had the bonus thrill of playing with the brilliant Kara Grainger on the set right before! Kara and her kickass bassist David Guy (far right) were present at the historic “Hot Soup And Ice Cream” sighting in Troy, MT. Drummer Aaron Apter propelled Kara’s songs through the hard-driving set, and I just held on as best I could. What great fun – thanks for the invite, Kara! On to the Rhythm Room in Phoenix tonight…
What? Oh, no bigs. Just the BEST NEW ACT MUDDY AWARD WINNER Kivett Bednar Band playing TONIGHT at Montavilla Station, 8PM - midnight! Come on out to 417 SE 80th Ave if you wanna have your face melted and your worldview scrambled by Kivett's monster toan and Edwin's percussive pelting and Jeff's low-end probing and my... hmm... my, um... my…incessant whining? Yep, mkay, that tracks. Be there!
It’s happening, people! Kivett Bednar Band at The Blue Diamond PDX, 8-11 tonight! Jeff Langston, Edwin Leon Coleman III plus your favorite keyboard player! (shhhhhh you know I am just go with it)
IT. IS. HAPPENING. Come down to The Blue Diamond PDX right now for Tall Static and Lloyd Jones, stay for the CHICKEN DONUTS!!! Chef Patrick is a friggin WIZARD!!!
Word to the wise: Something may happen at The Blue Diamond PDX tonight for Tall Static’s gig with special guest Lloyd Jones. I’m not at liberty to say much, and this thing may NOT happen – the mad genius Chef Patrick is neck-deep in viability testing, and it may not pan out. But if it does – if it DOES, friends, it will likely serve as reaffirmation of a higher power. You will want to be able to say you were there for the debut of this revolutionary taste treat.
Oh – and if not, catfish po’boys. There’s actually no way you don’t win! Oh yeah and killer music too. K see ya there byeeeeee
A lil' taste of what's coming up tonight at The Blue Diamond PDX when Tall Static is joined onstage by Pacific Northwest blues/R&B icon Lloyd Jones – here's Lloyd's appearance on my Muddy Award-winning album "In The Key Of Sorry"! Come on out and hear it LIVE tonight, along with Lloyd's own soul-stirring tunes and the Tall Static songs you know and love! 8-11 PM, killer menu and lovely beverages, tons o' fun!

I'm so incredibly thrilled to announce that my album "In The Key Of Sorry" received a Cascade Blues Association Muddy Award for Best NW Recording last Sunday! I'm pictured here receiving the award from Music Millennium's music industry heavyweight Terry Currier – a huge honor in itself! (📸 Debra Penk)
I want to convey my huge thanks to the Cascade Blues Association – both its membership for supporting and voting for me, and the CBA board and volunteers for undertaking the monumental task of producing the event again after a year without it. What an achievement to be doing it again!
In the same spirit of the Academy Award for Best Picture going to the producer(s), I share this award with Jimi Bott, my friend and co-producer. It just would not be the same record without him sitting in that seat. Make your records at Roseleaf Recording! That guy's obviously doing something right!
Thanks to everyone who assisted in the fundraising efforts to get this project finished, and again to those who nominated and voted for it. If you don't yet have your own copy (whaaaaaat?!), a quick trip to patmcdougall.com will take care of that in a jiffy.
Last week I posted about my Muddy Award nomination for the Keyboard category, but trust me, I wasn't disregarding or trivializing the fact that I also received a second nomination, for my April 2023 release "In The Key Of Sorry." It has just taken me a bit longer to think about what to say. First I need to express my sincere and extreme gratitude to everyone who thought to write in my album title in your nominations. Next I need to thank my co-producer and engineer/studio owner Jimi Bott, who played a massive role in getting this thing to turn out right. And then there's everyone who helped me complete the project by pre-ordering the CD, buying Key Of Sorry swag and attending the release party – plus all of you who continue to listen to the tunes and come up and tell me how much you love the record. Eight months after its release, "In The Key Of Sorry" is currently hanging out at #18 on the Roots Music Report Contemporary Blues chart, #33 on the Blues chart, and has also made it onto RMR's Best of 2023 charts – #41 in Contemporary Blues and #79 in Blues! The positive feedback of this nomination just brings me such joy considering that, as I've mentioned before, the album really began as a half-joking idea. Being nominated in the company of Chad Rupp and TJ Wong makes it feel even better. Thank you Cascade Blues Association members, AND – HUGE THANKS AND KUDOS TO THE CBA VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBERS!!!
Happy Almost New Year! Several months ago I had the honor of being invited by master photographer Norm Eder to participate in his "Every Artist Has A Story Project," which promotes and benefits The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, an eminently worthy organization that helps musicians receive essential health care. The video linked here is the product of our photo session at Artichoke Music where we talked about music and gratitude and I tried to appear intelligent and less unhinged than usual. Features a bonus song from my album – enjoy! And thank you, Norm! (shoutouts to Ben Rice, Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle, Lisa Mann, Joanne Broh, Tall Static, Whit Draper, Ed Pierce and Jim Solberg)

'Tis a busy Thanksgiving Week for me...
Tonight (Tuesday), join Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle at Billy Blues Bar and Grill from 8-10 PM as we play some blues, soul, R&B and whatever else strikes Ben's fancy! This is a really cool Tuesday evening gig that has truly turned into a THING! Get there!
Tomorrow night (Wednesday – Thanksgiving Eve!), join Kivett Bednar, Edwin Leon Coleman III and me at The Blue Diamond PDX from 7-10 PM for a bit of a blues adventure in an organ trio setting! I'm very excited about it because I know Kivett and Edwin are two of the best possible people to make this experiment painless and fun. BONUS: word on the street has it that traveling troubadour of timeless tunes Melody Guy-Ketcham will pay us a visit and treat all of you with several of her songs! Throw in delicious eats by Chef Patrick and peerless service and holiday cheer from Becky the Wonder Server, and it's a can't-miss evening. Come on out and ease into Thanksgiving with us!
Here's a thing that happened – my CD is going to Memphis!
Thank you to the acts who submitted their recordings for consideration. Please make sure to check out all their latest recordings and grab a copy! Music is the perfect gift!
Sure was pretty in Kelseyville, CA last night for our Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle gig on the shores of Clear Lake.
Also pretty? My B-Free organ stand built by Gary Schaeffer! It’s holding up to the rigors of the road just fine, and gets put to bed in its custom-made foam cover by Tuki after every gig.
Calm before the storm. Cool hall! Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle Telluride Blues & Brews Festival
While this photo does show off my MAG Organs C-2 nicely, it doesn’t do justice to the throngs of people who flooded into The Moon at O’Bannon’s when Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle started playing last night as part of the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. Honestly, this might have been the best performance by this band that I’ve been part of; I’m extremely proud. Ben himself was on fire and we just followed suit, and the crowd gleefully pushed us on. A truly great night.
And now, time to outdo ourselves on the Blues Stage today at 1:00 PM!
Happily showing off my new B-Free clonewheel organ stand, handcrafted by the ingenious Gary Schaeffer. Seen here enclosing my MAG C-2 at the Blue Diamond in Portland on Thursday and the Highball Room at Northern Quest Casino outside Spokane last night. Last photo is the B-Free folded flat and slipped into its custom foam-lined cover from Tuki Covers. Consider me a very pleased customer!
I finally have a blues nickname.
