Introducing Madeline Peck, who joined w+b in 2023.

Born in southern California and raised in Oregon, Madeline is an award-winning graduate of PSU’s architecture program, where she earned both her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. As an avid gardener and ardent (+ long-suffering) Blazers fan, when not in the office she can be found tending to her vegetable garden or cheering on the Blazers at the Moda Center with her 11-year-old daughter Noelle.

Madeline has been an integral part of our studio since joining our team. Her work experience with us has included a wide-range of residential, educational and commercial projects.

Please join us in extending her a much-belated welcome (or an early year anniversary celebration)!

More photos from our project at Dixon Recreation Center: the new Mind-Body Studio. Working closely with OSU’s Department of Recreational Sports, we completely transformed an existing Multipurpose Room into a calm, meditative, and flexible new space. Improvements included updated finishes, state-of-the-art lighting and wrap-around perimeter curtains, enabling instructors to create a variety of moods and atmospheres.

We are excited to share new photography of our recently-completed improvements to OSU’s Dixon Recreation Center. Our project encompassed renovations to three key areas on the first and second floors and included creating a new welcome desk at the building’s main entry. To maximize flexibility and the integration of technology, the project strategically incorporated modular wall systems throughout. It has been wonderful to continue our collaboration with OSU’s Department of Recreational Sports to improve their well-loved facility.

PSU ARCH 481: Front Doors on Back Alleys | Portland Alley Housing and the Missing Middle

We have been enjoying teaching a senior undergraduate design studio this term at the PSU School of Architecture. The project is focused on small-scale, incremental infill housing on alley sites based on the opportunities provided by zoning code changes through Portland’s Residential Infill Project.

Congratulations to all our students on your great work and thoughtful presentations this term. And thank you to our reviewers for taking the time to join our final review and sharing your insights and feedback.

New interior photos of our Highlands House project, which carefully integrated a new 2nd floor family room above an existing one-story home. A new skylit central stair links the two floors and brings daylight into the center of the house. The project was beautifully crafted throughout by Raglione Construction.

We are excited to share new photography (and one before photo) of our Highlands House addition and renovation in SW Portland. In this project we worked closely with the owners to expand their 1960s ranch house to better engage with its site and incredible views. Our concept worked with the existing home’s form and materials and extended the existing roof slope up to create a new 2nd floor volume and roof deck facing toward Mount Hood, Mount Adams and the Gorge.

We are excited share new photography of our recently completed H|M Townhouses in North Portland. This project developed two contiguous lots near the University of Portland to create new multi-unit infill housing based on opportunities offered by Portland’s Residential Infill Project zoning code changes. The design creates a new fourplex adjacent to a new triplex, adding density to the neighborhood and better taking advantage of the site’s corner and alley frontages.

The JOY Project: Re-Envisioning Portland With Love

In early 2023, Gather:Make:Shelter launched The Joy Project, featuring ceramic house sculptures donated by artist Thomas Orr and painted by 100 people experiencing homelessness. Participants have been paid for their work at citywide workshops and they are donating the finished houses for an exhibition and festival on September 9th at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Expressing their vision for the city they call home, project participants are activating the plaza with a 600-square-foot installation in collaboration with architect Miles Woofter from .architecture

The Joy Project brings together a network of sister nonprofit organizations and houseless artists who are working together to amplify their impact and create meaningful change. Proceeds from the auction of the 100 ceramic house sculptures will be shared among partner organizations, nurturing a culture of mutual support.

This new stormwater facility at PCC Sylvania is detaining and treating stormwater!

As part of our recent project renovating the PCC Sylvania A&M Building, Josh Lighthipe at KPFF Civil recognized an opportunity to create a new stormwater facility through a Percent for Green grant from the City of Portland BES. The design solution maintains essential parking spaces, treats significantly more stormwater than required for the project, and complements the adjacent existing facility, “Sylvania Falls.” The facility visibly demonstrates PCC’s commitment to sustainability and was incorporated in the project at no additional cost to the College.

Midterm review at the PSU School of Architecture: We have been teaching a graduate studio focused on exploring design ideas for a new home for the Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts (CSIA).

Located two hundred miles east of Portland on the Umatilla Indian Reservation near Pendleton, Crow’s Shadow () is the only professional printmaking studio located on an Indian Reservation in the United States. It was founded in 1992 by artists James Lavadour (Walla Walla) and Phillip Cash Cash (Cayuse and Nez Perce) with a mission is to “provide a creative conduit for educational, social and economic opportunities for Native Americans through artistic development.” Both a community and a national resource, Crow’s Shadow hosts a prestigious artist-in-residency program, traditional indigenous arts workshops, and educational programs.

As Crow’s Shadow has grown in reputation and programmatic vision, it has outgrown its current facility and envisions creating a new building on the Reservation. Our studio is exploring designs for this new home and considering how best to realize the potential of the opportunities offered by CSIA’s history, location, and programs.

Congrats to all our students on the great work and thank you to our reviewers for taking the time to join the review and provide feedback to the students.

We are excited to share these new photos of our project to expand and enhance the Corvallis-Benton County Library’s 2nd floor. The project enclosed an existing exterior patio and opened it to the rest of the library, transforming a previously underutilized area into a series of distinctive new spaces including this wood-lined quiet reading room with great views to the Courthouse and downtown Corvallis. After each photo is the “before” image—the new spaces extend to the edge of the former terrace parapet visible through the windows.

It was wonderful to work with the Library and Wildish Construction on this impactful improvement to a beloved community resource.

We are excited to announce that Matthew Stoll has joined w+b as a Designer.

A Cincinnati native with six years of experience centered on creating vibrant, dense, mixed-use neighborhoods in places formerly neglected and forgotten, Matthew came to Portland first for an internship and later for graduate school at UO Portland. He has been inspired by his extensive travels throughout the Americas and SE Asia, especially Nepal where his wife's family operates a school and invests in education throughout rural areas. Together they partnered for the subject of his thesis: a primary school built on an ecologically focused education model and integrating traditional/sustainable building materials with modern techniques. A Certified Passive House Consultant, Matthew also enjoys illustration, foraging, cooking, origami, and spending time with his adopted border collie, Aalto.

Welcome Matthew!

Construction of our University Park Townhomes is set to get started this June! For the past several months we have been working with a client to explore the opportunities created by the zoning code changes in the City of Portland Residential Infill Project (RIP). This project develops new multi-unit, multi-phase infill housing on two contiguous lots in North Portland featuring both street and alley frontages. Phase one of the project maximizes the currently available buildable area per code. Phase two is designed for future increased density and would add two more townhouses on each property. In all the new units, simple forms and materials are used to both relate to the scale and character of the existing residential context and to create a quietly distinctive new development within walking distance of the University of Portland.
