We want them on our head at all times – it’s the best tool we’ve got besides our chainsaw”. The small team of 4 relies on the headsets for communication when backing up or navigating through traffic in the truck when the driver can’t see. They use them for blind rigging, when the man lowering the tree limbs can’t see what to do, the rest of the team and verbally guide him. “To run the business you’ve got to answer your phone,” says Miller. Sonetics’ Bluetooth headsets allow them to take calls while continuing their work, even while clearing a thicket. “I can be on the phone and still hear my men talking. The crew can always be talking to each other. Not just about work but visit all day about everything else in life. Instructors at the competition used Sonetics’ wireless communication headsets outside the heavy equipment while using Sonetics Apex Connect with speakers inside (for closed cab) and headsets for open cab when hearing protection is a concern. Before they started using the headsets nearly 4 years ago, they had some ‘close calls’ where machines almost backed up into trucks. With the ability to communicate clearly in real time and give each other warnings, they operate even more safely and efficiently. “I’d be screaming across the parking lot at someone to get me a level,” says Rob, a foreman on the milling crew. “Now I don’t have to do that. The headsets paid for themselves the first time we had a near miss,” Rob says. Rob has an APX379 headset with Bluetooth, so he’s able to take important calls directly from his headset. “This is a huge game changer because in the past I would miss it, but now I don’t even need to take my phone out of my pocket.” The family-owned business has provided high-quality commercial and municipal asphalt services to New York state since 1955.
