River Restoration Northwest (RRNW)
Promote responsible practices in the design of river restoration projects. Enhance discussion and exchange of ideas between river restoration professionals
Dr Jack Schmidt speaks this morning on the Colorado River crisis and gives us some insight on the water that grew the salad greens we ate at lunch yesterday. 🥗
The Gorge is smiling at us today!
First up this morning we have Dr. Daniel Schindler!
Rukaiyah Adams and RRNW President Caitlin Alcott in lively conversation about community connection to rivers and how vital heart and hope are in restoring rivers.
Virtual Spring Short Course with Dr. Emily Fairfax
More info and registration link at: https://www.rrnw.org/virtual-courses/
The course is open to anyone, anywhere in the world. Please share!
When: April 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 17 and 19 from 8:30-11:30am (PDT) each day
The Big Picture: a quick-start lesson on using free, publicly available remote sensing tools to monitor riparian changes over space and time
The main objective of this short course is to develop the skills and knowledge needed to undertake simple remote sensing analyses of any riparian zones. In order to practice using remote sensing tools, we will work through case studies that focus on identifying and monitoring the impacts of beaver activity within riparian zones in the western US.
February 6, 2023 Sign up even if you aren't attending the symposium!
This year we are offering an incredible number and variety of short courses. Are you a watershed steward? Do you need to raise awareness about unique issues in your watershed? Getting the word out about a new project and public involvement process? Are there problems that most people drive by every day yet still don’t understand and whose support you need so your org CAN make a difference? Or maybe you’re just managing a really exciting project and want to share some key content but you don't have the resources for a large production?
Michelle Alvarado and Henry Kim are spearheading one of our newest courses, “Science to Social.” Leveraging some of their work on higher production films, they will bring you the essence of what it takes to design a story with a strategy behind it, and make the most of common video apps and tools to bring your ideas to social media and to your intended audience.
Part 1 - Social Media Campaign Strategy and Story Development - Do you have a project or initiative that you want the community or stakeholders to get on board with? Then consider this course. You will walk away with an outreach strategy, a storyline, and specific content to create. The value to do this with a marketing company is $1,500+, so $200 is a great deal.
Part 2 – Hands-on Production and Video Editing Technique - Are you ready to raise awareness visually with short or longer videos? Bring your phone or tablet and learn some video techniques to show a more meaningful story with visual artistry. You will walk away with a short video and the skills to produce more videos with ease.

Register now for the Introduction to Ecohydraulics Short Course!
Join instructors Rocko Brown, PhD and Joseph Merz, PhD along with fellow river scientists to learn more about ecohydraulics!
Ecohydraulics is a multidisciplinary field and practice that combines ecology, biology, chemistry, engineering, hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology to understand how aquatic organisms and their ecosystems are shaped and evolve with lotic systems. This course aims to introduce ecohydraulics to people interested in learning about some of the basic principles and concepts with a focus on applications to solve real world management questions. We intend this course for new and/or curious professionals seeking an introduction or refresher on ecohydraulics.
